Continuing our astro-mythological theme today — SCORPIO
In the domain of the king of gods, not all the world is under control. Against the planet Jupiter, which embodies the principles of good, stand the forces of evil that destroy its harmonious world order, symbolized collectively by the planet Pluto.
The name Pluto means “the wealthy” (the same Indo-European root as in the word “full”), and the ruler of the underworld, who opposes the king of gods, is always rich: for everything that vanishes from the earth belongs to him. Heavenly gifts and fruits of earthly labor turn to decay, and only Death grows richer each day. For life to move forward, the god of the underworld, like the scorpion that stings itself in order to seize its prey, brings wars and diseases upon the living, destroying all that cannot withstand the test and therefore must be destroyed. The gods of this mytheme are often associated with herds, as a symbol of multiplying wealth. They sometimes take on the features of livestock (for example, horns or hooves), and even in their traits one can recognize the characteristic depiction of the bull.
In justification of the underworld, it can be said that its function is to preserve and retain within its depths, hidden from the sight of men and gods, the earth’s potential.
In social terms, the Pluto mytheme reflects the development of pastoralism, and even the formation of internal levers of state power and state funds that became its support (gold reserves, later banks). The word “good” also means “wealth,” while “evil” etymologically reaches the meaning of “force.” The origins of abstract concepts were simple — force seizes wealth, and yet cannot fully master it. Later, the concept of evil became significantly more complex and formed the image of another world as a socialized representation of Chaos: thus the realm of Hades became Hell.
Thus life reveals itself in the sign of Scorpio — corresponding to the beginning of the night and the mobilization of the subconscious, generating fears and revealing the problems of the human soul. The planet Pluto appears before us as material and spiritual treasures, sexuality and temptation, power bought by money, the sense of the authentic, the testing of critical situations, inner immovability, remorse, retribution, and the awakening of conscience.
The sign of Scorpio compels humanity to penetrate the truth of what is happening and transform everything that does not correspond to this truth. The gods of the underworld bestow upon people of this sign a powerful potential of passion, helping them delve into the very depths of the subject under investigation, uncover hidden causes, and at times reveal in their relentless analysis the destructive energy of Shiva, the demonism of Lilith, and the vengefulness of Orcus. Being a skilled psychologist and knowing all the levels of the human soul’s hell, this sign seeks to interact with people on a secret level — at the peak intensity of emotions, which mobilizes the entire potential of the partner: it is precisely in this way that truth is revealed.
From the World Serpent — guardian of treasures — and the gods of wealth, Scorpio has inherited the ability to work with finances as a form of sublimated energy. From the ruler of countless herds — souls of animals and people — Scorpio inherits power over the collective energies of the masses.
Using its venom to dissolve obstacles and not allowing souls to be covered by the comfort of self-satisfaction, Pluto involves people in the transformation of life, which in truth is accomplished only by the greatest transforming force — love.
