We continue publishing our series of articles on the zodiac signs through the lens of mythology. Today we present CAPRICORN
In the open space formed by the Heavens, amidst the primordial waters, the Earth emerges. The boundless movement of the element has no goal and yearns for result. Yet within the element arises the world of solid substance, possessing beginning and end. The limited world is stable: it is defined by rigid laws that preserve it. These are the laws of time and fate, symbolized in astrology by the planet Saturn.
The Earth, where ancestors are buried, becomes one’s own. Migration ends, and humanity finds its Homeland, a concept passed from generation to generation, from lineage to lineage. Tribes claim specific territories, and gods too become tribal, guarding their own kin. Such is the Roman Vesta, Saturn’s eldest daughter, or Rod, the most ancient head of the Slavic pantheon.
The task of those governed by Saturn is to bring everything to completion — to perfection — in all they undertake, including their own fate, crystallizing their image and style. Capricorns often narrow their lives down to a single goal, which, like Vesta’s undying flame, warms their soul, invisible to those around them. This goal is their inner backbone, enabling matter to sublimate into spirit.
Capricorns are born during the darkest and heaviest time of the year, making this the most austere and serious sign of the zodiac.
A Capricorn’s achievements become meaningful milestones in life. Utilizing external circumstances to serve their purpose, they manage to accomplish what is planned in time, so that realization becomes the next step on their carefully measured path. Relying on the best memory in the Zodiac and the backbone of their personality, this sign takes responsibility for their existence and the work of their hands. Like a creator shaping the world from clay, this brings the person the life wisdom of elders who once founded and preserved their lineage, and the Earth itself—Gaia.
The ancient image of the Capricorn constellation is a reptile, a half-animal-half-fish, not yet human. Conveying to us the past of the human race, this sign does not always manage to live in the present, often overlooking the new needs of the human soul. It can consciously lean toward a mechanical approach, restricting and deadening the world around to prevent interference with the fulfillment of its goal. For the planet Saturn, the world operates under the strict principle of “tit for tat,” demanding the sacrifice of all that is most precious and dear, postponing what the soul truly desires. The burden of responsibility that Capricorn tends to perceive itself as bearing — the responsibility of Atlas, who holds the Heavens upon his shoulders — must not narrow the horizons of its vision.
