In this variant, the “I” images are too mental and tend to be overly oriented toward the future, or, conversely, overly attached to the present. In the first case, the person invents an image they are unable to follow, endowing it with traits they barely understand, so the image turns out to be too unrealistic. For example, a person wants to be inventive, have a brilliant mind, see into the future, or, say, never feel jealousy; however, the image constructed from these traits is unreal for this person, and, moreover, they are too mental (and thus fickle) to embody a role that could be played in life—and as a result, there is self-deception and deception of others, along with constant frustrations. In the second case, the person, on the contrary, orients their self-image toward their present self, but not toward the potential abilities inherent within, rather toward what already exists, what is long known and very boring. Naturally, such an image, created with a certain degree of disgust and without imagination, is rather impoverished, yet life-sustainable, although in fact the person profanes themselves, forbidding both creativity and development. The resolution comes through contemplating one’s most urgent developmental issues and synthesizing external images that have the potential for real existence, while remaining open to information from the future. External religiosity, if present, manifests as a mental connection with God, who reveals the person’s future and helps orient them in the present, correcting their “I” images (at lower levels of religiosity this occurs outside the person’s awareness, at higher levels—with their participation).
