Ancient people believed that a person’s, city’s, or even nation’s destiny was encoded in their name. This belief is connected with today’s custom of changing one’s name. As in ancient times, such a change implies a shift in fate. Artists and writers often do this by adopting a pseudonym; people change their names when taking monastic vows or church office; those joining secret societies; and there are other, more individual cases.
Several theories exist worldwide explaining how a person’s name may influence their character—for example, social and emotional theories.
From a social perspective, a person’s name carries a flow of social information about its bearer. Knowing just the name, one can form an idea about their nationality, possible religious affiliation, and key character traits and temperament.
These perceptions are roughly similar among different people, which in turn leads to roughly similar treatment of individuals bearing a particular name. And when thousands of people encounter someone “by name,” this inevitably shapes similar character traits among different bearers of the same name.
According to the emotional theory, a person’s name is perceived as an emotional stimulus. Some names sound soft and gentle, evoking pleasant feelings in others; others, conversely, may trigger unpleasant emotions and be perceived as irritating. This is the so-called “music of names.” The nature of this “music” greatly influences how others relate to the name’s bearer.
Yet neither of these theories explains the reason behind a name’s influence on a person’s destiny, although such a connection undoubtedly exists. Astrology can help: by applying fundamental astrological principles, we can find a “key” not only to a person’s birth but also to uncover the mystery of how a particular name affects an individual.
Any name consists of a specific set of letters. Each letter of the alphabet is linked, through its numerical value, to one of the nine planets. Thus, the set of letters in any name simultaneously forms a specific set of planets, which, according to their astrological nature, favorably or unfavorably influence the person bearing the name. This principle forms the foundation of my theory “Astrology of Names: Planetary Influence.”
To summarize briefly, according to this theory:
1) A name can influence a person through the planets that “govern” it. The idea is: if the planets comprising a person’s name are in strong positions in their natal chart and harmoniously aspected (interact) with each other, then this name is destined to assist its owner, attract success, and support their advancement in life; if, however, these planets are in weak positions and negatively aspected, such a name becomes an obstacle, creating difficulties in fulfilling life plans, and should best be changed;
2) A name can directly influence a person’s character and destiny through compatibility with their birth date. The idea is: any birth date (day, month, year) has a key ruling planet. To determine which planet is the ruler, the birth date is reduced to a single digit via numerological addition (summing all its component numbers). The planet corresponding to this number becomes the ruler of the birth date. If this planet is compatible with all (which is extremely rare) or at least most of the planets composing the name, then the name is suitable and in harmony with the person; if not, it is advisable to change it. By the way, this applies not only to the first name but also to the surname—thus, women who marry and replace their maiden name with their husband’s surname may thereby significantly alter their destiny;
3) The planets comprising one person’s name may harmonize or conflict with the planets in another person’s name (here we have another level of synastry compatibility: name + name). In practice, harmonious name compatibility proves no less important than harmonious natal chart compatibility! Name compatibility can exert positive or negative influence on relationships in general, as well as on specific areas of life and joint activities—marriage, business, sex, friendship, and so on.
