Saturn’s Cycles

The core concept of Saturn is limitation. The qualities of this planet—concentration and sublimation (these symbolic qualities are directly reflected in the physical state of the planet, which is actually undergoing a process of compression)—generate depth of self-awareness and understanding of the meaning of transition to a higher level.

In astrology, Saturn symbolizes experience, testing, the passage of time (Chronos), and patience. It is called the “planet of fate.” It also represents the principle of limitation, as Saturn is the one that imposes boundaries, rigid form, and structure upon any expansion. This planet is regarded both as past experience and as the tasks a person must resolve.

In the chart, Saturn shows the areas of experience where a person must learn to take responsibility and demonstrate maturity and discipline. It is a factor related to the quality of the chosen career. It indicates the type of duties a person must assume and the lessons they will need to learn. The quality of the sign shows how, through Saturn, one will learn to cope with life’s difficulties, work, and discipline. It is precisely through this path that one arrives at order and security. By struggling and overcoming, one ascends step by step. Saturn also shows in which area difficulties and limitations will arise, which ultimately are meant to lead to achievements and a new level of interaction with life. This process requires concentration and self-denial, through which we develop willpower and patience—necessary conditions for the development of true spiritualization.

S. Arroyo “Astrology, Karma, Transformation”

Saturn indicates:

  • The principle of preservation and compression —thus pointing to an inward-directed, personal contraction toward greater confidence in one’s inner strength.
  • The principle of form, structure, and stability associated with law, cultural and social traditions, father, and authority figures, etc.
  • The principle of time and learning through repeated experience.
  • Seriousness, caution, worldly wisdom, patience, practical economy, and conservatism.
  • Saturn relates to the core nature of a person, the purity of their true “I.” Therefore, the difficulties a person usually encounters stem from the fact that they are not living from the position of their core nature, but rather from styles, social norms, and traditions. Saturn becomes especially harsh when we deviate from expressing our true essence.
  • Psychologically, Saturn represents the extent of the ego-complex, which becomes more rigid with age.

It is often said that Saturn rules the dense material plane. When a person incarnates into the physical world, their body becomes “compressed” and thus concentrated. Hence, the pain, tension, and pressure of earthly life have an evolutionary purpose, a purpose of development.

Saturn’s action demonstrates the value of work, as all wonderful beliefs and ideals of a person have very little value if they are not applied in daily life through effort. Therefore, the pressure of Saturn should be perceived as beneficial pressure for accomplishing the work necessary for our deep-level development.

However, Saturn alone, without love and ease, leads to immobility and death.

From the standpoint of spiritual progress, Saturn is beneficial in two respects. First, it shows us what the reality of the material world is when all our desires, hopes, and self-deceptions are set aside. Second, the Saturnian experience in the material world tests us at every step, leaving no room for escapism or self-deception.

SATURN CYCLES

Cycles: 7, 14–15, 21–22, 29–30, 36, 43–44, 51, 58–59, 66, 73–74, 80, 87–88.

Past present future

1st cycle 0–30 years – past

We come to know ourselves through the surrounding environment, which reacts to us and our expectations—parents, siblings, etc., interact with us and instill in us who we should be, what they expect from us, what is good or bad, right or wrong for us.

All phases—always changes of form and structure—are useful for consciously letting go of what is unnecessary, of things.

1st phase – 0–7 years – physical growth

2nd phase – 7–14 years – awareness of the “I”

3rd phase – 14–21 years – “I” through communication, partnership

4th phase – 21–30 years – search for one’s true “I,” career orientation, life purpose.

2nd cycle 30–59 years – present

This is the time of a second birth, or the birth of the “individual I.”

The meaning of these periods is the same as above. In the 4th phase—realization of one’s place in society.

There is an opportunity to become an adult, consciously responsible, and independent individual, capable of further successful development upon this foundation. This should then be connected with a sense of joy and awareness of what is happening (Jupiter). Finally, the “I” has formed the clearest, most conscious, and responsible personal structure, capable of finding its way in society, having integrated experiences of success and failure, and ready to ascend to the next level of individuation.

If this has not been achieved by now, experience may lead to egocentrism or such a strong fixation on external achievements that positive cooperation, communication, and willingness to share common views and participate in joint endeavors become impossible.

3rd cycle 59–88 years – future

The beginning of the aging process.

The spiritual rebirth of a person.

In the ideal case, if in the first cycle we succeed in freeing ourselves from collective attachments of the past and choosing our own path, then in the second cycle, having matured, we successfully walk along it, and, freed from the limitations and demands of daily life, lay the spiritual foundation of our future.

1st phase – reduce physical activity, shift focus to the spiritual.

2nd phase – discover new spiritual values for oneself.

3rd phase – to what extent we are still capable of learning something new, how spiritually flexible we are. Possibly, changes in environment may occur here; possibly, one will have to deal with issues related to care or separation.

4th phase – passing on all one’s wisdom to the next generation, to one’s future. A person may become a mediator between worlds. (If a person is bound to physical activity—through illness—it only intensifies the necessity to turn toward the spiritual foundation of being).
