The European Space Agency has released an image of a giant cloud of glowing gas and dust known as NGC 2359, located in the constellation Canis Major and also referred to as the “Thor’s Helmet” nebula.
The nebula is massive, spanning about 30 light-years. It lies approximately 15,000 light-years from the Sun. According to Naked Science, the image presented by ESA is a composite of photographs taken by the XMM-Newton telescope and the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile.

The bright neon colors in the image, astronomers say, reveal the nebula’s composition. The blue hue represents X-ray emissions, while the pale red and green indicate ionized hydrogen and oxygen. At the center of the cloud shines a Wolf-Rayet star, HD 56925.
