Catherine Aubier. Astrological Dictionary
Opposition and square: internal impulses may have a destructive effect or create imbalance. The person may find satisfaction in darkness and suffering. Instead of lighting fires, he extinguishes them.

Neptune square: It takes great inner honesty to recognize its lack. This is the most difficult aspect. The Neptune square brings distorted meditations, often of a lower order, an incomprehensible attraction to the planetary principle, and at the same time a very poor understanding of it—rather, a false understanding, illusions and mistakes that are hard for the person to believe in and even harder to part with. Neptune deceives the person, the person deceives the whole world and himself, then sees part of this deception and stops believing—just in case—in anything, including himself, but only briefly (or rather, partially), after which he again deceives himself and the whole world, and the world deceives him. This can lead into an abyss, to despair and vice, or, conversely, awaken higher aspirations and call the person toward God. The outcome is hard to predict, but in any case, the person should remain constantly vigilant and never consider any achieved progress as permanently secured. In the case of a lower starting point, it may feed on very impure meditations (at the level of alcohol, drugs, family scandals, etc.), and re-education will be difficult. The Neptune-Saturn square may bring a perverted satisfaction from one’s own inability to do anything, and the person may long remain in a cycle: brief focused effort ending in nothing—prolonged meditation on one’s own worthlessness, with a masochistic tint, into which others will likely be drawn. (Generally, the square of outer planets is an aspect of dark teachers, particularly with mystical and psychological overtones.) Karmically, this aspect indicates the necessity to work through the themes of self-deception and lower meditations (“vice”) through the material of the planetary principle, whose activation makes corresponding subconscious programs highly pronounced. The processing here is difficult, requiring renunciation of all lower meditations (including sweet self-accusations) and consistent, honest, constructive work in areas related to the planet; activation of Pluto and, to some extent, working through Saturn, can help. At a high level, the person grasps the subtlest expressions of the planetary principle and its connection with the principle of cosmic love as it manifests in external reality and the souls of specific individuals, potentially making them a mystic, preacher, or saint—but they never fully free themselves from an irrational sense of guilt before the world in the planet’s spheres. Pluto square: Angelic wings grow from the places rubbed raw by the cross of fate. The influence of the Pluto square manifests as a certain discomfort for the person regarding the sacrifices demanded by fate in the area of the planet—at least this is how it will seem to the person themselves. They should reconcile themselves with the idea that these sacrifices will be required at an inopportune moment and will cause unpleasant consequences seemingly unnecessary and pointless; but such is, unfortunately, the nature of this karmic program. The Pluto square is the aspect of Job, which fortunately does not always go equally far. Manifestations of the planetary principle in the external world will sharply dissatisfy the person, and they will develop a desire to bring order into this area of the world, for which they will require corresponding authority. However, the intention of karma is directly opposite: to bring purity and order into the area of the planetary principle within the person’s inner world and subconscious, for which the person must gain mastery over their instincts and lower impulses belonging to the planet. Until the person realizes this, they will repeatedly face severe sacrifices and a fate that will pursue them precisely to the extent that the person themselves provoke it—whether subconsciously or consciously, intentionally or accidentally, from good or bad motives. An essential point is that in the area of the planet, the person possesses something like a magnifying glass that vividly reveals their own (and others’) minimal imperfections and errors. This aspect offers great potential for inner development and self-purification, and at the same time produces for the world dark teachers of a dictatorial type who exterminate low and middle expressions of the planetary principle in the external world by power, fire, and sword, leaving room only for the most subtle (which they do not see), or sometimes merely ruins. At a moderate level, typical behavior includes harshness combined with elements of crude command and nihilism toward others, alongside a desire to master the planetary principle oneself. Internally, the person strongly desires to reveal their ideal to the world, but this simply does not work out, or (in the person’s opinion) the world has not yet evolved enough and thus cannot perceive the perfection revealed to it.
