Most of us have probably experienced a situation in which the Moon appeared much larger than its actual size, especially when it was near the horizon. In reality, this is an illusion. The Moon does not change its size, grow, move away from or closer to Earth. It is merely an illusion, a trick of the mind over the eye. As far back as 1913, Italian psychologist Mario Ponzo unraveled this mysterious cosmic secret. Ponzo hypothesized, and later scientifically proved, that the phenomenon of the enlarged Moon on the horizon is merely an optical illusion. His research became known as the Ponzo Illusion. The explanation lies in the fact that our brain distorts the Moon’s true size, making it appear larger than it actually is. To test this, simply look at the enlarged Moon, then cover everything else with your hands—the Moon will instantly appear small.
