In California, near the city of Santa Cruz, there is an amazing place whose existence is hard to believe, even when seeing it with one’s own eyes. The small clearing in question is located on the slope of a gentle hill overgrown with huge eucalyptus trees. For decades, crowds of tourists have been heading to Santa Cruz because mysterious things happen in this clearing, or, as they say, anomalous phenomena occur.
Approaching this zone is felt by people from afar. The heart begins to beat rapidly, and a state of mild euphoria appears. All of this could be attributed to the slight incline one has to overcome to look at the “anomalous clearing,” however, there are realities that cannot be ignored. Near the city of Santa Cruz, there truly is a unique place that impresses the imagination of any person.
Near the boundary of the anomalous land zone lies a two-meter concrete beam. One of its ends is outside the clearing, i.e., on normal territory, while the other is located within the zone of mysterious forces. The guide, who usually accompanies tourists, pulls a special device from his bag, with which one can verify that the beam is lying horizontally. After this, he invites two volunteers of approximately the same height from among the group participants to stand on its opposite ends. And here all those present notice that the person standing on the end of the beam located in the anomalous zone appears much shorter than their partner. After this, the test subjects switch places, and everything repeats: the person who ends up in the zone becomes shorter in height!

The mysterious clearing near Santa Cruz was discovered 60 years ago by George Preiser. The doctor he consulted about a headache prescribed him walks in the fresh air. And so one day, while walking in the vicinity of the city, Preiser suddenly felt that in a clearing lost among the eucalyptus bushes, he felt somehow particularly light. George began coming there every day and soon got rid of his headache. Overjoyed, he built a hut on the clearing and settled in it. This hut still stands there, though the roof has now collapsed and the walls are heavily tilted. People trying to approach the building feel a strange pressure: it seems to them that an invisible elastic wall stands in their way, which is quite difficult to overcome. They have to lean forward strongly and move with visible effort against the wind.

It has been noted that a compass brought to the clearing begins to behave very strangely. It correctly shows the cardinal directions only at a height of one meter, but if it is lowered lower, the needle begins to spin wildly.
A wooden chute about five meters long is installed on the clearing, sloping towards its center. If a heavy metal ball is sent down the chute with force, it is unlikely to make it halfway. In the middle, the ball stops, and then, increasing speed, rolls back. Non-metallic objects also behave just as strangely on the clearing. In the center of the hut built by George Preiser, once a week towards the end of the day (usually on Tuesdays) conditions simulating weightlessness appear for a few seconds. People who find themselves there at this time suddenly fly up to the ceiling!
By the way, in Russia, near Krasnoyarsk, there is a rock called Krasny Greben (Red Ridge), where similar gravitational anomalies have been recorded. A resident of Angarsk, V. Antrakov, found himself in those places in the summer of 1977. “After climbing Krasny Greben, I stopped, admiring the view of the Bazanakh canyon that opened up,” he told journalists some time later. “There were three other boys, about twelve years old, on the rock. Suddenly, some force squeezed my head, bound my hands and feet, lifted me off the ground, raised me into the air, and carried me towards the cliff. I realized that I was about to fall to the bottom of the gorge and be smashed to pieces. I was overwhelmed with horror. There was no one around. And suddenly I received such a strong push in the chest that I fell on my back.
The person who overcame gravity
Something similar happens in the clearing in the area of the city of Santa Cruz. People who find themselves there at a certain time have been able to witness an unexpected manifestation of the gravitational anomaly. The guides get particular enjoyment from watching tourists, who are pondering that such a thing cannot be, suddenly get knocked off their feet by an unknown force or, helplessly waving their arms and legs, fly up to the ceiling of the old hut.
One of the guides, Bill Hopkins, who has worked in the anomalous zone for about 30 years, says that many tourists, hearing about the local wonders, come with various instruments. One Japanese man, for example, brought a laser emitter. Turning it on, he was surprised to find that in the epicenter of the zone, the laser beam, which was traveling strictly horizontally, suddenly deviated downward.
Several trees growing in the clearing also cause surprise: their trunks have a spiral shape. Researchers of anomalous phenomena suggest that this shape of the trunks is due to the unusual arrangement of the force lines of magnetic and electric fields.
Unfortunately, despite the fact that the existence of the anomalous zone has been known for over 60 years, it has still not become the subject of serious scientific research. The authorities of the city of Santa Cruz prefer to use it as a lure for tourists interested in mysterious territories on our planet.
