Mercury – Mars
(Transit Mercury → Natal Mars)
Various sources for the child’s horoscope
Your child is very impulsive, impatient, cannot sit still, and lacks the patience to see things through to the end. They likely enjoy arguing, competing, and proving their point. Their way of expressing thoughts is often sharp and direct, and sometimes they may even lie. They often struggle to understand others and cannot see things from different perspectives. If their views are questioned, they take it as a personal offense. Parents should teach them to focus, be careful, and compromise with other children.
Het Monster. Aspects
Combativeness; defends a point of view solely to argue because the opponent rejects it. Critics, grumblers, pedants. They miss essential details because they are too impulsive. If their views are questioned, they take it as a personal offense. Nervous, sharp-tongued. Quarrels over shared funds.
Catherine Aubier. Astrological Dictionary
Opposition, square: the critical spirit becomes a dominant trait and transforms into verbal aggression. Events are poorly planned or mismanaged.
Avesalom Podvodny. Aspects
Opposition of Mercury: Before speaking, ask yourself: do your words hurt your own thoughts? An opposition to Mercury raises the issue of the relationship between the planet’s principle and rational thinking. One should not assume that a strong Mercury in the chart grants intelligence—the latter is determined more by the general evolutionary level. As for Mercury, intelligence depends more on its processing than on aspects. At a low level of processing, dominant Mercury suppresses the planetary principle with mental clichés, profanes it, and distorts it mercilessly. For example, in an opposition between Mercury and the Moon, an emphasis on Mercury leads the person to think entirely formally, strictly in accordance with social clichés: to be healthy and happy, I should exercise in the morning, marry at twenty, have three children, and work without straining myself. Without aligning their fate with this scheme, they cannot hear the true voice of their needs, even the most basic ones—unless the Moon decisively takes the main emphasis in this opposition, fully subduing Mercury, or rather, subordinating it to itself. This means allowing only those thoughts into the mind that align with its own rhythm, and the person themselves thinks only when the Moon thinks. This leads to obsessive thoughts about food or primitive but sweet sex, sharply lowering the evolutionary level of behavior or leading to strong frustrations, neuroses, or depression. Here, processing involves clarifying the role of thought in the manifestations of the planetary principle, which should generally guide it but not control every detail or replace it with crude mental schemes. On the other hand, thought can also aid in developing new directions and materializing the planetary principle, rather than becoming its obedient servant—a lesson one often learns the hard way when faced with the incomprehensible chaos that arises after prolonged dominance of the planetary principle over Mercury. At a high level, the planetary principle gains a stable channel into the mental plane, and the person receives thoughts that align with the development of the planetary principle—this feeling of thought and speech being obedient cannot be confused with anything else. It provides a sense of absolute self-confidence in appropriate situations (those around begin to marvel at the person’s stable and conscious speech, which is processed through the opposition).
Opposition of Mars: Having overcome an external enemy, watch as it becomes internal; having subdued the internal one, beware of how it externalizes. The planetary principle in opposition to Mars will constantly experience a forceful influence, and it will be difficult for the person to establish harmony with this force. If the main emphasis is on the planet and the person somewhat identifies with its principle, the external environment quickly becomes aggressive and begins to interfere significantly. If they start actively resisting it, they soon grow fond of the struggle and, forgetting their original plans, reaccentuate the opposition, causing Mars to become internally emphasized while the planetary principle loses its significance for the person. It then externalizes and takes on the role of an enemy, as described by the well-known saying, “What you fought for.” For example, in an opposition between Mars and Saturn, one cannot fight for discipline—one can only honestly try, with minimal effort, to be disciplined; otherwise, such a struggle ends in major troubles, external restrictions (Saturn’s lower octave), and the triumph of internal chaos. The issue often lies in the fact that the person feels strength only in external manifestations of the planetary principle but tends to fight it. After defeating and internalizing the planet, they lose their strength entirely, and the most painful and incomprehensible moments are precisely those imperceptible turning points of the opposition. Processing grants stable strength to the planet’s manifestations, including the vibrations it needs, giving the person great self-confidence and the ability to balance even the most acute and tense situations (related to the principle of the planet and the houses where it and Mars are located, as well as the aspects of these planets). At a low level, especially with Mars afflicted, its opposition can produce destructive aggression in both the person and their environment. It is important to remember that the instability of the opposition—frequent uncontrolled shifts in emphasis between the planets—indicates poor processing, while systematic work to track and consciously manage it is the most effective way to achieve stability and harmony with oneself and the world.
Frances Sakoian. Aspects
Combativeness. They engage in sharp verbal arguments when provoked. Often, they defend the opposite point of view simply to argue, which does not contribute to their popularity. Critics, grumblers, pedants, and nitpickers in thoughts and words. They miss essential details because they are too impulsive. They often fail to understand another person. A tendency to identify with ideas. Unable to see things from different perspectives. If their views are questioned, they take it as a personal offense. Their feelings and instincts often contradict their thinking. Prone to nervousness and hypersensitivity. Sharp tongue; in less cultured individuals, this turns into rudeness, which disrupts harmony in relationships. Quarrels over shared funds.
