Opposition of Mercury: Before speaking, ask yourself: do your words harm your thoughts? An opposition to Mercury raises the issue of the relationship between the planet’s principle and rational thinking. Do not assume that a strong Mercury in the chart grants intelligence—the latter is determined more by the general evolutionary level, while Mercury’s role is to process information rather than its aspects. At a low level of processing, a dominant Mercury suppresses the planetary principle with mental clichés, profaning and distorting it mercilessly. For example, in an opposition between Mercury and the Moon, an emphasis on Mercury leads the person to think entirely formally, strictly adhering to social stereotypes: to be healthy and happy, I should exercise in the morning, marry at twenty, have three children, and work without straining myself. They fail to align their fate with this scheme, unable to hear the true voice of their needs—even the most basic ones—unless the Moon decisively takes the primary focus in this opposition, fully suppressing Mercury or, more precisely, subordinating it to itself. This means allowing only those thoughts into the mind that align with the Moon’s current state, reducing the person to obsessive thoughts about food or primitive but sweet pleasures, sharply lowering their evolutionary behavior or leading to strong frustrations, neuroses, or depression. Here, processing involves clarifying the role of thought in the manifestations of the planetary principle, which should generally guide it but not control every detail or replace it with crude mental schemas. On the other hand, thought can also aid the development of new directions and the materialization of the planetary principle, rather than becoming its obedient servant—a lesson people often learn the hard way when chaos erupts after prolonged dominance of the planetary principle over Mercury. At a high level, the planetary principle gains a stable channel into the mental plane, and the person receives thoughts that align with the development of the planetary principle—this feeling of thought and speech being obedient cannot be mistaken. It provides a sense of absolute confidence in oneself (others may perceive it as unwavering and conscious speech).
Opposition of Jupiter: If, by admiring others, we identify with them, then by admiring ourselves, we project onto others. An opposition to Jupiter gives the planet (and the person in the areas they govern) a sense of extraordinary importance. Indeed, processing such an opposition grants the planet an exceptionally stable (karmic) privileged position and opportunities to expand its principle, which constantly arise both in the person’s life and in the lives of those connected to them. However, at a low level, there is no constructive interaction between the Jupiterian and planetary principles, and depending on the emphasis on the planets in the opposition, the person falls into one of two positions. The more pleasant scenario is when the emphasis is on Jupiter, and the person feels like a wealthy potential benefactor in the areas governed by the planet. However, the planetary principle is lost in their arrogance, gradually externalizing and turning against the person. For example, an opposition between Jupiter and Venus may produce a talented and highly erudite art critic, but at a lower level of processing, the person will merely believe (with full inner conviction) that they excel in art (and love), constantly imposing their judgments with aplomb and causing discomfort. (A pronounced opposition of Jupiter, such as to a stellium, can, alongside great opportunities and abilities and strong patrons, also bring complete blindness to one’s own greatness, insane arrogance, and a complete lack of self-criticism.) An emphasis on the planet, conversely, activates various temptations, but processing the aspect lies in expanding internal potential. For instance, in an opposition between Venus and Jupiter with an emphasis on Venus, the alternative might be: either external fame, exhibitions, public and international activities, or a shift in creative direction (mastered style or technique) and the development of something new. An opposition between Saturn and Jupiter may, at some point, present the person with a choice: either strict control over numerous subordinates or the development and mastery of vast areas of inner space. Both may be needed in life, but it is crucial not to confuse these stages of biography.
