Bedroom Feng Shui

Our home is the place where we come to rest, relax in a peaceful environment, where our closest people live. In our home we communicate, calm down, love, and ultimately sleep—vulnerable in our unconscious state. Therefore, our home, and especially the bedroom, should be a reliable shelter from all external worries and troubles.

The bedroom is a place for restoring both physical and psychological strength. A person should feel as relaxed and free as possible in it; only then will rest and sleep be truly restorative, and intimacy (as the bedroom is the favorite place for this) become prolonged and vibrant.

Therefore, the bedroom must be protected from any negative external influences. The atmosphere of the bedroom should be calm, peaceful, and soothing. According to feng shui principles, the bedroom contains the source of “yin,” which must be preserved. Strengthening the influence of “yang” is advisable only when a more active sex life is desired.

If the bedroom is small in size, light colors should dominate its interior, and the design should be light and airy, thus creating a sense of open space. If the sleeping area is located within a large room, richer, deeper colors should be used to enhance coziness. When arranging the bedroom, personal comfort should be the main consideration—choose colors and objects that visually evoke a feeling of ease.

The bed should be placed in the coziest spot possible. Under no circumstances should the bed face the door directly, especially with the sleeper’s feet pointing toward the entrance. The ideal position is one where the person lying in bed is concealed from someone entering the room, yet can see them—thus creating a sense of security and simultaneous control over the situation.

Feng shui discourages placing the bed with either the headboard or footboard against a window. If two people sleep in the bed, as is common in marital bedrooms, it is better if there is free access to the bed from three sides.

In the bedroom, care should be taken when hanging multiple mirrors. Mirror surfaces make the flow of qi so intense that they may disrupt peaceful sleep. One mirror near the dressing table is sufficient for a bedroom. Ideally, the mirror should be placed in a corner of the room. The maximum acceptable number of mirrors in a bedroom is two. A third mirror may be placed on the inside wall of a wardrobe. The mirror should be round in shape, without sharp corners, and relatively large. If the mirror is placed in a poorly lit corner, both the mirror and additional lighting will add brightness and visual spaciousness to the room, which is important for harmony.

However, no mirror should be positioned so that a sleeping person is reflected in it. This rule does not apply to sexual activity, but in that case, the areas designated for sleep and intimacy should be separate.

Furniture for the bedroom should preferably have rounded corners. If furniture has sharp edges or protrusions, it should be arranged so that the “poison arrows” of the furniture do not point toward the bed. Nightstands should be lower than the mattress, otherwise the circulation of qi during sleep will be obstructed.

Determine in which sector of your apartment the bedroom is located. This will allow you to effectively use the advantages of the sector and minimize its negative aspects.

The best room for a bedroom is the northern one. This direction is ideally suited for meditation and sleep. The northern orientation helps relieve tension, relaxes the nervous system and muscles—especially important for impulsive and active individuals. However, it should be noted that this northern direction also enhances the sexual aspect of relationships for couples sleeping together. Yet, the northern room is not recommended for single people.

The northeast sector of the house governs the intensity of qi movement, which may affect sleep quality. This room should not be used as a bedroom for someone suffering from insomnia or illness.

If a person is currently in a period of stability, the best sector for their bedroom would be the northwest area of the apartment.

On the other hand, if a person desires change, career growth, or business success, it is better for them to sleep in the southeast room. A room with east-facing windows is also acceptable, though its energy does not positively influence a person’s communication skills or mutual understanding.

The southern room will encourage sexual activity, igniting passion and physical desire. However, its active energy does not allow for peaceful sleep, making full rest difficult. If there is no alternative, the color red should be avoided in a southern bedroom.

The western room is also good for family relationships, though its energy has a different focus—romantic and family-oriented, calm and peaceful. Warm, trusting relationships develop between partners in this room. However, people will not receive support in career or business matters here.

In contrast, the southwest room is unsuitable for anyone, and its energy is especially unfavorable for children and young people. The southwest direction brings an excessive amount of qi that moves unstably, in bursts. However, there is a way out of this. By applying feng shui principles, favorable areas of the room can be strengthened, and the negative impact of energy pulsation reduced.

If a child’s bedroom also serves as a study area, the desk should be placed in the northeast part of the room. Maps and a globe can also be placed here. Wardrobes should not create “poison arrows” with their protrusions. Open shelves are better replaced with closed cabinets or drawers. A crystal can be hung near the window; reflecting light, it will enhance the energy of success and strength.
