What is it and how to calculate?

We invite you to explore the topic of tattvas. The Sanskrit word TATTVA has many meanings: matter, essence, principle, period. In addition, it refers to the movement of universal ether associated with the natural circulation of energy. Astrology studies the manifestations of tattvas in time. These are, so to speak, the smallest periods of a cycle. Every two hours, five tattvas complete a full cycle. Thus, each tattva lasts 24 minutes. The cycle begins at sunrise, when the solar disk crosses the mathematical horizon. Each tattva has its own name, color, and planetary rulers.

The tattva in which a person is born strengthens the influence of the corresponding planet in their birth chart. For example, if a person is born in the tattva of Mars, the qualities of Mars will be intensified in them—they will be more active, decisive, and possibly more aggressive.
The first tattva after sunrise is AKASHA, ruled by Saturn, and its color is black.
The second tattva is VAYU, ruled by Mercury and the Moon, with green and blue colors.
The third is TEJAS, ruled by the Sun and Mars, and it has a red color.
Next follows PRITHVI, ruled by Jupiter, with a yellow color.
Finally, the last one, APAS, is ruled by Venus and has a white color.

Akasha – tattva
The serious nature of this tattva indicates that during this period a person should not initiate any actions or begin new endeavors. This is the tattva of silence, suitable for prayer, meditation, and introspection. Starting a creative process at this time may bring suffering and torment, and any undertaking begun will not succeed. If a friendship or love relationship begins during this tattva, it will bring disappointment and possibly a quick breakup. Under the influence of this tattva, death usually occurs after a severe and exhausting illness. Akasha rarely brings pregnancy, and if it does, it may result in the mother’s death.
During the influence of this tattva, a person tends toward pessimism, emotional disharmony, and a gloomy mood. Often, a person cannot understand even the simplest things, perception slows down, and forgetfulness is observed.

Vayu – tattva
Vayu is the tattva of movement and speed. It represents wind, air, flight, walking, and all forward motion. It is associated with swift energies, contacts, and information exchange. This tattva is favorable for starting hiking or mountain trips, as a person becomes much more enduring and less prone to fatigue.
It is advisable to resolve issues requiring quick responses during this tattva. Work involving imagination and creativity proceeds well. However, shopping, starting a new job, or making new acquaintances are not recommended. A marriage contracted at this time will likely be unsatisfactory. Conception during this tattva is dangerous and may bring the mother much distress and difficult labor. Gossip, slander, and intrigues intensify at this time. Offers and information received during this tattva are unreliable and require verification. A person born under this tattva has an unstable nervous system and, under unfavorable aspects, may be irritable or envious.

Tejas – tattva
This tattva gives a person great energy, activity, and dynamism. Independence and a strong desire for freedom are evident in those born under this tattva. Under unfavorable aspects, aggression and irritability may manifest.
Tejas causes excess heat in the body. During this time, a person can bathe in cold water without catching a cold and is drawn to spicy food. The eyes become more alert. Treatment of illnesses leads to improvement.
It is favorable to begin new ventures, organize entertainment and sports events—anything requiring courage, decisiveness, and strength.
The negative influence of this tattva manifests as a tendency toward aggressive behavior, jealousy, irritability, and argumentativeness. If a marriage is contracted at this time, the couple will constantly compete for dominance. Surgical operations are not advisable. This tattva is unfavorable for starting journeys or travels.

Prithvi – tattva
This tattva strengthens the will to live, fosters a desire for justice, and brings optimism. Any endeavor begun during this period proceeds successfully, favorably, and results in something solid and reliable.
Prithvi acts smoothing and unifying. Marriages contracted under this tattva develop in harmony and love; friendships and romantic relationships are favorable and strong. A child born under this tattva deeply loves and is strongly attached to their parents. During this period, a person defending their rights will find fair judges and lawyers who will successfully handle their case.
Illnesses and crises beginning at this time pass safely and quickly. Anyone beginning treatment under this tattva will certainly recover.
Prithvi is the ideal time to initiate anything meant to be long-lasting and solid—building a house, seeking and starting a new job, relocating or moving to a new home or city, establishing strong relationships.

Apas – tattva
This tattva is favorable for trips and travels, shopping, signing agreements and contracts, and investing money. It is a time of joy, love, success, fertility, and wealth accumulation. It is also good for moving into a new home, planting, gardening—especially when the Moon is waxing. Apas-tattva enhances intuition and awakens creativity. A woman who conceives during this tattva will have an easy pregnancy and a smooth delivery. Sexual life is primarily influenced by Apas-tattva.
The negative influence of Apas-tattva manifests as selfishness, greed, a tendency toward indulgent pleasures, and cravings for alcohol and overly sweet food.
Overall, Apas-Tattva acts favorably: it brings joy, peace, understanding, amusement, games, and various forms of pleasure. Relationships formed at this time are harmonious and strong, and marriages are happy.

Example of tattva calculation
Suppose we need to determine the tattva of an event that occurred on July 5, 1991, at 13:20 in Moscow.
Sunrise in Moscow on that day was at 3h52m. Starting from sunrise, a new cycle of five tattvas begins every two hours: 3h52m, 5h52m, 7h52m, 9h52m, 11h52m, and so on. The event time falls within the interval from 11h52m to 13h52m. Therefore, we add 24 minutes successively to 11h52m, obtaining the following intervals:
11h52m – 12h16m Akasha, Saturn’s tattva
12h16m – 12h40m Vayu, tattva of Mercury and the Moon
12h40m – 13h04m Tejas, tattva of the Sun and Mars
13h04m – 13h28m Prithvi, Jupiter’s tattva
13h28m – 13h52m Apas, Venus’s tattva.
Therefore, the event occurred in Jupiter’s tattva. Similarly, we calculate tattvas for any undertaking, activity, or birth.

Practical experience working with tattvas yields interesting results.
For example, during Saturn’s tattva, it is very difficult to get through on the phone, negotiations are difficult, and students or schoolchildren taking exams at this time may experience mental blockage, memory lapses. Even a well-prepared candidate may be unable to clearly express their thoughts or answer questions. But once the tattva changes, everything proceeds differently.

It is interesting to observe the flow of conversation among friends or acquaintances. If it begins during Mercury’s tattva, all issues are resolved quickly, and questions and answers align well. But then Tejas-Tattva begins, and almost instantly an argument erupts—often over nothing. Usually, the person born under this tattva argues the most.
Venus’s tattva is excellent for beginning musical activities, singing, or creative work, especially if it involves art.

All matters you need to discuss with superiors, issues to be resolved in official institutions – these fall under the domain of Jupiter. It almost always brings a positive outcome.

First, we recommend determining your place of birth, as the planet ruling the father figure will be stronger in your birth chart. Then observe the change of tattvas throughout the day, notice how events unfold with each tattva shift, how your mood and the mood of those around you changes, and so on.
