Sun – Mercury Conjunction

Sun-Mercury Conjunction

(Transit. Sun → Natal Mercury)

Different sources for a child’s horoscope

The child may be highly sensitive to criticism and attacks from others. It is difficult for them to separate the expression of thoughts and feelings from their ego. A problem may arise if they do not learn to distinguish between their ideas and their personality. If they make a mistake at school, they might think the error reflects poorly on them and thus feel inadequate. They need to be recognized as intelligent. The greatest benefit in this regard could come from public speaking, participation in discussions, or written work.

Het Monster. Aspects

Activity in Mercury’s sphere—new ideas, work, friendship. Inability to objectively assess oneself. If the conjunction is in Gemini, Aquarius, or Libra—great intellectual abilities. All efforts are usually crowned with success, although frequent obstacles may come from powerful individuals. Combusted Mercury—subjective thinking, stubbornness, often speech impairments. “Wide” conjunction (approx. 10°)—sharpness of mind and speech, talent in language and writing. Mercury behind the Sun—always difficulties with work and government service; if the 10th house is empty or afflicted, any career is excluded, and service will bring no benefit.

Catherine Haugh. Astrological Dictionary

Favorably aspected conjunction: integration of consciousness and rationality; self-assertion through intellectual communication and exchange of ideas. Poorly aspected conjunction: an atmosphere of instability, nervousness, suggestibility. Note that in astrological tradition, Mercury in conjunction with the Sun is said to be “combusted” by the Sun. This should be interpreted as follows: the closer Mercury is to the Sun, the more the individual’s “I” obscures mental faculties; this is the realm of subjectivity. Mercury positioned far from the Sun (in semi-sextile, i.e., a 30° aspect), on the contrary, indicates objectivity.

Avesalom Podvodny. Aspects

Conjunction with the Sun: “Call yourself a mushroom—then climb into the cart.” A planet’s conjunction with the Sun imparts an imperative quality to its manifestations—at a high level of aspect integration. At a low level, the imperative more strongly relates to the necessity of processing the planet. The Sun illuminates the lower expressions of its principle and activates them, primarily through direct pressure. At a low level of Sun integration, it acts through rigid imperatives imposed upon the planet, suppressing its creative impulse and forcing its principle to manifest within very narrowly defined boundaries that it fundamentally cannot fit into; this creates excessive inner tension and an eventual explosion. The creativity of the Absolute manifests both in the timing and character of the explosion (unpredictable in advance) and in the form and trajectory of the fragments. If the conjunction is unprocessed but harmoniously placed, these explosions will be more dangerous to others, and the planet’s creative impulse will only express itself through a strictly egoistic consumption within the areas corresponding to its principle. For example, an unprocessed Sun-Mars conjunction produces great but futile activity, which the individual themselves perceives as extremely important and useful, while simultaneously possessing the ability to completely drain another’s energy, leaving the other person literally exhausted and without even a hint of gratitude. Processing the conjunction (and the Sun) leads to a shift toward a higher egregore, where solar initiative moves beyond the rigid command, serving instead as a suggestion of a desired direction of activity, and above all, attention. Then the interaction between the Sun and the planet is significantly eased, and the planet receives from the Sun a kind of weak magnetization, which serves as orientation in complex (for the planet) conditions when the optimal choice is not obvious. Conjunction with Mercury: Anxiety arises not only from the absence of thought but also, in many cases, from its presence. Mercury imparts a strong mental coloring to the planet it is conjunct with, even when this is entirely unnecessary or undesirable for the individual; for example, with Mercury conjunct Venus, relationships will contain so much calculation and rationality that any immediate feeling or living sensation will not last long, especially if Mercury is stronger than Venus. Unfortunately, mental coloring is not equivalent to intelligence, as it most often reduces to widespread superficial notions and societal conscious and unconscious stereotypes, which will actively influence the planet’s principle, strongly schematizing and trivializing it. The person will certainly feel this, but all attempts to escape this dead (each time in its own way) influence of Mercury on the planet by expanding the sphere of its expression (for example, seeking new lovers in the case of Venus) are doomed to failure, since the mind, though crude, is flexible and can adapt. Processing the conjunction proceeds primarily through working on Mercury—i.e., becoming aware of the role and meaning of mental activity as an energetic flow and planetary principles, providing general direction but not replacing them. This processing is complex, as it requires restructuring of thinking, rejecting heavy, linear social stereotypes, and transitioning to working with lighter and more flexible thought forms capable of adequate interaction between the Cosmos and the planet’s principle. For example, Mercury conjunct Mars with a strong Mercury at a low level of processing produces not a person but practically a robot, for whom any active action must first be mentally modeled in the head, completely unable to trust the feeling and logic of their immediate energetic expressions. Processing the aspect brings great creative abilities, manifesting as subtle and inventive indirect mental management of the planet’s principle at those moments when it is necessary.

Francesca Sakoian. Aspects

Creative forces and activity in Mercury’s spheres—new ideas, work, friendship. Tendency to realize ideas and make decisions with willpower. Hinders objective self-perception, since the Self is equated with the mind, making it difficult to view oneself from the outside. Great spiritual strength and energy. If the conjunction is within 1/2 to 4 degrees—Mercury is combust: mental functions are over-saturated with solar energy, resulting in spiritual disconnection. In the heart of the Sun—produces the same difficulties as complete assimilation; the waveform picture changes as solar energy is modified by Mercury, creating an ideal frequency for thinking—will becomes an instrument for spiritual aspirations. This position grants great intellectual abilities, especially if the conjunction is in Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius, or Libra.

S.V. Shestopalov. Planetary Aspects

Mercury never moves more than 28° from the Sun, so the only aspect it can form with the Sun is conjunction. Two types of Sun-Mercury conjunction are distinguished, depending on the orb of the aspect: – conjunction orb less than 2° or greater than 8°. Qualities of this conjunction—sharp intellect, activity, mobility, dynamism, sociability, friendliness, ambition, quick mind, intuitive, adaptive, observant mind, good information absorption, memory. – conjunction orb between 2° and 5°. Qualities of this conjunction—reflectiveness, subjectivity, anxiety, nervousness, chaos, talkativeness, inconsistency, illogicality, speech defects. The positive side—depth of thought, richness of associations, observantness, attention, encyclopedic knowledge.
