Ascendant — Calculate Online

Ascendant (rising sign) — is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It defines your outward behavior, first impression, and physical constitution.

An exact birth time is required for accurate Rising Sign calculation — even a few minutes' difference can change the result.

What is the Ascendant

The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the zodiac degree that was rising above the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. The Sun shows who you are inside, the Moon governs emotions, and the Ascendant reflects how others perceive you: your demeanor, speech tempo, style of dress, and initial reaction to unfamiliar situations.

This is why people with the same Sun sign often create entirely different impressions. Two Tauruses with Ascendants in Scorpio and Gemini behave almost oppositely externally, though their values may be similar.

The Ascendant also marks the beginning of the 1st house and determines how the remaining eleven houses of the natal chart are arranged. Without it, the chart remains incomplete: the planets are known, but the life areas they govern remain unclear.

Why is an accurate birth time needed for calculation?

The Ascendant shifts by approximately one degree every four minutes and changes signs on average every two hours. A 15-minute error is usually not critical, but if you were born near a sign boundary, even a few minutes can yield a different rising sign and shift all house cusps in the chart.

The exact time is typically listed on your birth certificate or in the hospital’s medical records. If the time is unknown, the Ascendant calculation will be approximate: the Sun, Moon, and planets in signs will remain correct, but the Ascendant and houses should not be trusted.

How does the Ascendant differ from the Sun sign?

The Sun sign is determined by the birth date and changes once a month, so it is widely known. The Ascendant depends on the time and place of birth and changes every two hours, meaning people born on the same day in different cities will have different Ascendants.

Horoscopes for the general public almost always refer to the Sun sign. Astrologers, however, read forecasts based on the Ascendant, as it more accurately describes real-life circumstances.

How to use the calculator

Enter your date, exact time, and birthplace; the coordinates and time zone will be filled in automatically. The calculation is performed using the Swiss Ephemeris, the same data used by professional astrological software.

The result will display the Ascendant sign and its degree. You can then follow the links below for a detailed description of your rising sign.

Can the Ascendant change during a lifetime?

No. The Ascendant is calculated for the moment of birth and remains constant. What changes is how strongly it manifests: in childhood and youth, behavior often aligns more closely with the Ascendant, while in later years, a person may rely more on their Sun sign.

What is the rising sign, and is it the same thing?

Yes, “rising sign,” “Ascendant,” and the abbreviation ASC all refer to the same concept: the zodiac sign rising on the horizon at birth. The term “Ascendant” comes from the Latin ascendens, meaning “that which rises.”
