In the world, billions of people live who are unlike one another. Each develops under different conditions, traditions, and beliefs. Therefore, it is no surprise that we may all think differently. Totalitarian power is not based on differences of opinion but on the common fears of people. Fear governs more reliably and harshly—all you need is to cultivate it to the point where one person cannot overcome it. Fears drive actions at the instinctual level, often preventing rational and objective thinking. In ordinary life, fear keeps us from recklessness, but when it becomes a person’s master, it itself begins to control that person, forcing them to be unlike themselves. When you know your fear “face to face,” it will no longer be able to control you. That is why Ukrainians cannot be broken—their desire to be a free and prosperous people is stronger than the fear of being conquered!
