Horary Astrology: Secrets for Beginners

An ancient Sumerian inscription states: “The science of the stars will help uncover the hidden—calm, warn, plunge into the whirlwind of bliss or despair.” Indeed, astrology has stood guard over human curiosity since antiquity, predicting success in undertakings or warning of misfortune. Drawing up a natal chart, a birth horoscope, consultations on compatibility, destiny, and business matters have long become everyday reality.

Yet sometimes it is important to know a simple “yes” or “no,” or to receive a specific recommendation on a pressing issue. Will a planned marriage be successful? Should one change jobs? When is the best time to start a business? These are the questions horary astrology is capable of answering. Some consider the horoscope a matter of magic, others a game of roulette. Experts insist—horary astrology can dispel inner doubts.

Origins of predictive astrology

One often encounters the view that the horary concept borders on mysticism. No wonder, since its foundations were laid by Indian predictive astrology. Prashna-tantra—a work by the Indian sage Nilakantha—was, according to the author, a gift from Rama to his people. Horary astrology methods bore some resemblance to the ancient predictive charts popular in Ancient Hellas and Rome. Oracles divined by the positions of celestial bodies before an event, while Indian masters preferred to time the horoscope to the moment the question was asked. Horary interpretations served as a kind of everyday “guide” for a client weighed down by uncertainty.

Medieval Europe did not particularly object to horary astrology, regarding it as a “malicious heresy.” Nevertheless, “everyday” predictions found their adherents. Guido Bonatti, the most renowned Italian astrologer, dedicated his life to proving the validity of horary philosophy. Bonatti predicted numerous victories for his patron, Count de Montefeltro, thereby demonstrating the advantages of the ancient method.

Yet horary astrology owes its popularity to William Lilly. This gifted scholar, author of Christian Astrology, devoted an entire volume to the science of “how to resolve and judge questions that may arise for a person concerning illness and wealth, marriage arrangements, and career advancement.” This book remains a kind of Bible of horary astrology to this day.

Over time, almost nothing has changed in the traditional method of the “time” horoscope. A client seeks an answer from an astrologer; the master, following certain rules, correlates the question with the star map at the moment of inquiry. Based on the analysis, a clear and unambiguous answer is prepared. It seems simple. But is it really?

Horary astrology in action: learning the basics

Horary astrology, being ancient knowledge, is saturated with numerous terms that confuse the uninitiated. The key principles are crucial to grasp—especially when the basics of horary astrology are being studied independently:

  • The foundation of the chart is the zodiac circle combined with the circle of houses. They are superimposed so that the cusps of the houses correspond to the zodiac signs. The planet in the sign where the cusp is located becomes the ruler of that house. For example, if the Ascendant is in Cancer, the planet ruling the house will be the Moon; for Aries, it will be Jupiter.
  • The significator of each house is the planet that coincides with the house number. These significators are always the same, forming an astrological table. For the 4th house, the significator is always the Moon; for the 9th house, it is Jupiter.
  • The querent—the client who came to the astrologer (or the astrologer themselves)—is represented in the horary chart by the ruler of the Ascendant. That is why the ruler is traditionally called the primary significator.
  • The quesited—the essence of the question—is reflected in the chart and is determined by the cusp and the ruler of the house that governs the matter. For example, for love questions, the arrangement in the house under the rulership of the Sun is important. For marriage questions, one must focus on the 7th house under the rulership of Venus.
  • Mastering the ability to distinguish the key figures in a horary chart will allow a beginner to follow the astrologer’s reasoning closely. If interest in the fundamentals grows, it is worth delving deeper.

    Radicality: to analyze or not?

    Having constructed a horary chart for today that corresponds to the question asked, one should not rush to analyze it. First, it is necessary to assess its radicality. This wise term actually means only checking the chart for “suitability” for interpretation. If signs of non-radicality are present in the horary chart, it may indicate:

    • the astrologer (interpreter) cannot correctly interpret the question;
    • the querent formulated the question inaccurately, asked it jokingly, or concealed the true reason.

    Working with a single sign of non-radicality is possible, but if there are more than two, it is a serious reason to reconsider whether interpretation is appropriate. Pay attention if:

    • The Ascendant falls between 0° and 3° of a zodiac sign. This position means the question was asked too early—there are still no grounds for interpretation.
    • A position between 27° and 30° for the Ascendant indicates the opposite situation—the question was asked too late and is therefore ineffective.
    • The Moon is in the “Burnt Path”—the segment between 15° Libra and Scorpio—a sign of non-radicality that usually indicates a tangled emotional or material situation for the client.
    • Saturn is in the 7th house. This house in a horary chart represents the astrologer or the person answering the question. Saturn suggests that the interpretation may be erroneous or disappointing to the client.

    It is worth remembering that the practice of “time” astrology examines the entire chart as a whole. Therefore, non-radicality may simply indicate an increased complexity of analysis.

    A private example of a horary chart

    Horary astrology is less popular than synastry but more complex to understand. Nevertheless, even someone just beginning to explore astrology may find it useful.

    By constructing a horary chart with the help of a special program, one can obtain a general interpretation for their own question—as long as the exact time and place are provided. A detailed analysis is beyond a beginner’s reach, but the general direction is quite accessible.

    Example.

    Question: “Should I accept the new work project?”

    (Photo 1)

    • 27° and 30° Libra provide the ability to understand the situation and the possibility of waiting for a favorable moment;
    • 23° Scorpio grants the power of breakthrough;
    • 14° Capricorn helps utilize past experience;
    • 23° Aquarius allows control over the balance necessary for project execution;
    • 16° Pisces provides the required inspiration;
    • 27° Pisces enables control over the situation;
    • 13° Aries creates potential for the project;
    • 12° Cancer indicates the acquisition of necessary experience, even in the event of failure.

    It can be concluded that the favorable aspects of the chart speak of broad opportunities in case of a positive decision.

    Interest in horary astrology continues to grow—its effectiveness has long been proven, and the result is clear and measurable. For those seriously considering delving into the oldest “knowledge of the stars,” it is worth remembering a few more recommendations:

    • precise time, correct place. It does not matter how the question was received — by mail, phone, or email. One should rely on their own time zone and time frame.
    • absence of ambiguity. No matter how difficult it may be, one must learn to answer the question clearly — otherwise the meaning of the horary analysis will be lost.
    • confinement to the question’s scope. One should not look for signs of other situations in the chart. If the question concerns career, then the interpretation should be framed through the lens of work relationships.

    For those who doubt the significance of horary astrology, the Prasna-tantra responds: “There were times when even the Lord of all, Brahma, came to Vishnu so that He might teach Him the astrology of time.”
