Zodiac signs – 12 sectors of 30° each, into which the zodiacal belt is divided in European astrological tradition; this division corresponds to the Babylonian sexagesimal system of numeration and astronomy, where the celestial circle was divided into 360 angular parts, corresponding to the number of days in a year. The Sun passes through 13 zodiacal constellations. Before reaching the constellation of Sagittarius, it passes through the constellation of Ophiuchus for several days from November 30 to December 18, but since there must be twelve zodiacal constellations, one for each month of the year, it is not included in the zodiac.

Astrologers most commonly use the Gregorian calendar (or tropical year) to determine the zodiac sign. Due to the precession of the Earth’s axis, the zodiac signs shift relative to the position of the Sun in the zodiacal constellations, thus forming astrological ages.

The concept of constellations used in modern astronomy, adopted in 1922 at the first General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Rome, is based on dividing the celestial sphere into areas of arbitrary irregular shape. At the same time, zodiac signs are equal sectors of the celestial sphere with their vertices at the poles of the ecliptic, resting on segments of the ecliptic measuring 1/12th of the full circle, and in the tropical zodiac, they are shifted by about 21° (overlapping the previous constellation) [2]. Therefore, the modern astronomical system of constellations has no relation to the astrological tradition of dividing the ecliptic into 12 parts.
