A widow waits for her husband killed in war. This person will live in deep emotional confinement, which, if Cancer is not strongly afflicted, may go completely unnoticed. He will keenly feel his loneliness in moments of intimate emotional connection, when his heart, instead of opening, will contract under an icy crust. This is the difficult position of the 12th house, which in its harmonious form gives (limited) emotional empathy for the unfortunate, but if Cancer is not entirely harmonious and the house is unworked, the person will be very harsh, and the mere thought of compassion and forgiveness will astonish him: “How can one be so careless and sacrifice oneself?” Such a person at a low level will always try to arrange things so that in situations of the 12th house others sacrifice for him, and then his own sacrifices will be forced and emotionally very heavy. Yet this is not easy, as the person is extremely prone to secrets, intrigues, and self-deception, especially with a strong Cancer, making it very difficult to uncover and bring to light the hidden lower programs of the subconscious, such as secret (from oneself) inclinations and vices. The sacrifices a person makes must result from long-term practical work (6th house in Capricorn) and hold great emotional and inner significance for the person; only then can his deeply hidden abilities emerge, and the essential discoveries he makes in solitude will be revealed, transforming not only himself but also the subtle, and later the material, world.
