2 PROGRESSIONS OF THE FIRST YEARS OF LIFE
Transits of the first days of life can be linked to the symbolism of numbers—one, three, seven, and twelve. The choice of these numbers carries a certain numerological (esoteric) meaning. Modern mathematics singles out three, seven, and twelve as three numbers that form corresponding systems*. One is the number of the Absolute, the beginning, initiative, essence, integrity, potential, impulse, and source. It contains all numbers as possibilities. One is the beginning and end of any cycle, its Alpha and Omega.

The first principle of three, symbolized by an equilateral triangle, is perfect, universal, abstract harmony, self-sufficiency, and closure. The second principle of three, symbolized by the resolution of opposition, is movement, synthesis, connection and interaction, thought, love, and action. Three is the first number sufficient to form a system.

Thus, on the one hand, we obtain several life plans. The first covers 24 hours, the second—three days (and is divided into three periods of 27 years), the third—seven days (and is divided into seven periods of 12 years), and the fourth—twelve days (and is divided into twelve periods of seven years). In the ideal case, each of these progressions, in its own way, describes 84 years of life. On the other hand, they characterize how a person enters the world and act regardless of the duration of life, forming the core of character. These progressions describe the way a child adapts to the surrounding world and the formation of psychological mechanisms that allow an adult to act in a social environment.

In the progressions “1 day = 1 year,” the end of the first day corresponds to the end of the first year of life, the end of the third day—to the end of the third year, and so on. Psychologists emphasize the importance of these periods in shaping a child’s psyche. The well-known crises of “one year,” “three years,” “seven years,” and “adolescence” each signify a certain degree of personal growth.

Aspects in the progressions of the first years of life should be monitored by loving, attentive, and educated parents, and efforts should be made to create their positive reflection in real life. This is how one can positively guide a child’s psyche. Here lies the space for creative interaction between astrology and child psychology.

From the perspective of transits, by the end of the first year of life, the Sun completes its journey through the entire zodiac, encompassing the entire chart; by the end of the third year, Jupiter forms a square to its natal position; by the end of the seventh year, Saturn forms a square to its natal position; and by the end of the twelfth year, Jupiter returns.

Transits of the first days of life are a kind of meaningful “seeds” of the chart. Each has a unique character. I propose to call these progressions “proportional,” since all of them are equated to 84 years, but the proportion of “progressive time = real lifetime” varies each time.

FOUR “GRAINS” OF PROGRESSIONS
Grain of One
The most generalized semantic layer, corresponding to one, the Sun, and Uranus. This is the transit of the first day onto the natal coordinates (anthropocronic progression, see the article by A. Timashev in the journal *Astrologia* No. 2, 2002). During this time, the transiting cardinal cusps complete a full circuit of the zodiac and form all aspects to all natal points, “activating” the horoscope. It is also worth considering the transit to the relocation chart (coordinates for the new place of residence are built for both the natal and transiting charts; otherwise, the transiting cusps will remain unchanged).

The anthropocronic progression describes life as a whole, as if it lasted 84 years. Major aspects of progressive elements to the natal chart in the anthropocronic progression are unique; there are not many of them, and each forms only once. On the other hand, the anthropocronic progression describes the first year of life. It turns out that the first day and the first year of a person’s life determine their entire subsequent fate.

In the anthropocronic progression, one day equals 84 years, one year of life corresponds to 17 minutes 8.6 seconds, and one month—to a little over 1 minute 25 seconds. One hour corresponds to 3.5 years.

Let us consider the anthropocronic progression of John Lennon.

Chart 1. John Lennon. October 9, 1940. 17:30 GT. 53N25; 2W55

Lennon was born in Liverpool on October 9, 1940, at 17:30 GT. In February 1956, he became interested in the guitar and soon organized his first band. At that time, he was 15 years and 5 months old.

On July 15, 1958, Lennon’s mother was killed by a car. At that time, he was 17 years, 9 months, and 6 days old. The progressive Ascendant is in square to the Sun, the Midheaven in sextile to Jupiter and Saturn.

The progressive chart is calculated for 21 hours 55 minutes 43 seconds GT on October 9, 1940.

On August 23, 1962, Lennon married, and soon after, he had a child. The progressive Cross of Fate is in quincunx to Pluto, the ruler of the 8th house, and in conjunction with the South Node.

In the anthropocronic progression, this age corresponds to 4 hours 25 minutes 43 seconds: 15.5 × 17 minutes 8.6 seconds = 4 hours 25 minutes 43 seconds.

This corresponds to 5 hours 4 minutes 28 seconds. The progressive chart is calculated for 22 hours 34 minutes 28 seconds GT.

At the age of 21 years, 10 months, and 15 days, the progressive chart is calculated for 23:44:53 GT.

In the progressive chart, the Moon is on the Descendant.

In October 1963, The Beatles moved to London. This was the autumn of their first major success.

On February 5, 1964, The Beatles began their tour of the USA, which marked the beginning of their worldwide fame. The Moon is in sextile to the Midheaven, and the IC passed the Sun in the summer of 1963 (when the first signs of “Beatlemania” appeared).

In November 1966, Lennon met Yoko Ono.

At the same time, three cusps — the 1st, 9th, and 10th — are approaching an aspect to the Sun, with the Sun ruling the 9th house of the progressed chart. Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, at 10:50 GT. In 1905, he published his work on the special theory of relativity and defended his doctoral dissertation in philosophy. At that time, he was in his 27th year. The progressed chart is calculated for 18:16 GT. The progressed Descendant is in a conjunction between Mercury and Saturn. By the beginning of his 28th year, the progressed Part of Fortune conjoins the Descendant — Einstein becomes famous.

Chart 8. A. Einstein. March 14, 1879. 10:50 GT. 48N28; 9E59.

Progressions for March 1905

The initial impulses in the chart of the scientist and thinker are described by the aspects of the Moon, Mercury, and Mars. The Moon makes a trine to Venus within a day, a square to the Sun in the 10th house, and a sextile to Jupiter in the 9th house.

Venus: art, women, and a sense of harmony in the universe were very important to Einstein. He was a very captivating personality until the last years of his life.

Sun: Einstein was a creative nature. He was self-centered. He was always, as they say, in the public eye. He was interested in esotericism; his worldview was deeply mystical; he felt a sense of guilt as one of the creators of the atomic bomb; there were secret circumstances in his life (Sun in Pisces).

Jupiter: breadth of worldview, inevitability of the position of an ideologue, struggle for peace, humanitarian activities and unconventional ideas (Aquarius), spiritual journeys, and changes of residence.

Mars makes a semi-sextile to Jupiter, indicating activity, boldness, and daring in resolving Jupiterian matters. Mercury in the 10th house manages to conjoin Saturn, an aspect of concentrated thinking.

In the life of an infant, naturally, all these interactions manifest quite differently. For example, during the first day of life, the Moon’s trine to Venus may signify hours filled with tenderness, its square to the Sun — the first meeting with the father, and its trine to Jupiter — a hearty breakfast or the appearance of a doctor, and so on. Over the first year of life, these same aspects may play out differently — for instance, Moon-Venus could mean a meeting with a baby girl, Moon-Sun a parental quarrel, and Moon-Jupiter a “distant” journey in a stroller.

Let’s consider the case of a political coup. Catherine II was born on May 2, 1729, at 1:31 GT in Szczecin, 53N27; 14E33 (author’s rectification, justification see in the note “Rectification of Catherine II’s Chart” on our website). She seized power on July 10, 1762 (New Style), at 14:00.

The initial impulses in the Empress’s chart are shown, first of all, by the aspects of the Moon during the first day after birth. The Moon conjoins Venus in the 4th house in Gemini and Jupiter in Cancer on the cusp of the 5th house, which disposes the Midheaven, and enters the 5th house. Catherine’s character was lively, sociable; her method of ruling the country and army through favorites (and generosity toward them), as well as her love for home comforts and patriarchal Russian customs, are well known. It is evident that, touching Jupiter, the Moon also activates its aspects; resonance includes a powerful Finger of Fate — Mars-Saturn-Pluto. However, the aspects to these planets are formed by the Moon in progressions only the next day/year.

Finally, the Ascendant at the end of the first day ingresses into Pisces, the second sign of the 1st house, accentuating important personality traits of Catherine: the ability to mimic, intrigue, secret actions, and so on.

However, the coup was prepared in advance. The progressed Midheaven is in conjunction with the Sun, the ruler of the 1st progressed house. The progressed Ascendant is in a square to Uranus. In the relocation chart to St. Petersburg, the progressed Ascendant is in a trine to Mars, the dispositor of the relocation chart, the Descendant is in a partile conjunction with Saturn and in a square to Neptune, the dispositor of the 7th progressed house.

Chart 9. Catherine II. Progressions for the day of the coup

Age 33 years, 2 months, and 8 days, corresponding to 9h 25m 43s + 2m 51s + 30s = 9h 27m 124s = 9h 29m 04s. The progressed chart is calculated for 11:00 04 GT.

As we can see, the anthropocronic progression is a description of primary motivations and is a rather strong predictive technique. It can also be used for rectification of the chart. However, it should be kept in mind that in anthropocronic progressions, the cusps move quickly (the Midheaven passes 361° in 84 years, or more than 4° per year), so an aspect to a progressed cusp remains within orb for only a few months. A significant event occurs near the exact aspect (though not always!), but it can trigger subsequent events even after the aspect has passed.

The Grain of the Trinity

The second semantic layer corresponds to the symbolism of the trinity and broadly describes the potential achievement of harmony. Since it is related to Saturn’s cycle, which repeats three times in 84 years, the transits of the first three days should also describe a way to achieve inner stability, a life strategy in the broadest sense, and may relate to career and profession.

On the opinion of modern psychologists, by the end of the third year of life, the basic qualities of personality are mainly formed. At the end of the third day of Lennon’s life, at 17:30 GMT on October 12, 1940, the Sun moved to the Descendant, Mercury formed an opposition to Saturn, and Venus (ruler of the 2nd and 7th houses) trined the Midheaven of the natal chart. The importance of partnership, money, public exposure, concentrated thinking, words, art as a profession, and even the influence of a woman in Lennon’s life is evident. Mars made a semi-sextile to Venus, both planets in the 6th house; Mars rules the 1st house, and Venus rules the 2nd and 7th houses: work (Mars) in art (Venus), money, and partnership.

The progressed Ascendant made a semi-sextile to Uranus (independence, nonconformity, originality) and a quincunx to Neptune (interest in altered states of consciousness, attraction not only to music and poetry but also to alcohol and other Neptunian matters; mystery; atmosphere). In Pushkin’s chart, by the end of the third day, the Sun made a square to Uranus in the 9th house—a desire for independence, an original worldview—and closely approached a semi-sextile to Mars in the 8th house, which rules the 4th and 5th houses. The 5th house represents creativity, risk, play, and love affairs. The 4th house likely reflects pride in one’s origins and a painful sense of honor (Mars in fall in Cancer). Naturally, this also includes extensive travel and a desire to go abroad (the formula IV + IX is formed with the participation of masculine, active planets).

The fact that the Sun formed two aspects within the first three days is significant—it indicates an early unfolding of creative potential. Venus in sensitive Cancer made a conjunction with Saturn—an early experience of emotional cooling, disappointment, and an unconscious sense of resource scarcity, which may later lead to financial difficulties (Saturn rules the 2nd house). Symbolically, this reflects the acquisition of a calling and a premonition of difficult social realization (Venus rules the Midheaven).

Mercury in stubborn Taurus made sextiles to Venus and Saturn—excellent for shaping professional abilities. The Moon, having made a conjunction with Venus and Saturn—charm followed by cooling—portends difficulties with women, “English spleen and Russian boredom,” then entered the 9th house—expansion of worldview, travel, activities associated with the 9th house, i.e., enlightenment, publishing, and editing—and into the regal sign of Leo—early recognition and psychological readiness to shine. In Leo, the Moon makes a sextile to Jupiter, which rules the chart—readiness for success, education, breadth of information, interest in foreign cultures—a square to Neptune in the 12th house (which rules the 3rd house)—poetry, inspiration, the sea, music, but also gossip, secret enmity—and a sextile to the Sun—unfolding of creative potential and fame.

Then the Moon moves into Virgo and is about to form an opposition to Pluto. This is the final aspect of the three-day “seed” of progressions, but it does not materialize. In Pushkin’s chart, by the end of the third year of life, there is a premonition of confrontation with fatal forces, though the experience comes later. Perhaps that is why in his dealings with authority he “walked on the edge”—how else to assess his readiness to confess his intention to kill the tsar—to the tsar himself (!). As we can see, energetically charged aspects alternate here with interactions that drain energy, even frustrating ones.

Pushkin’s attitude toward women (who greatly influenced his creativity) was complex. His desire to find “the purest charm of the purest model” alternated with cynicism. The cause of this is likely the early alienation from his mother, which is described by the progressed conjunctions of the Moon and Venus with Saturn (the experience is repeated twice, first by the Moon, then by Venus, and is fixed in the unconscious for life).

In Catherine II’s chart, the progressed Moon made a conjunction with Venus in Gemini, ruler of the 3rd and 8th houses—a multitude of connections, the use of partners’ resources—then a conjunction with exalted Jupiter on the cusp of the 5th house (which rules the Midheaven)—achieving success through a creative (amorous) approach to career—then nearly simultaneous trines to Saturn, a sextile to Mars, and a square to Pluto—a very powerful combination that activated the natal powerful Finger of Fate from Mars and Saturn to Pluto, an enterprising, initiative mind—and a sextile to the Sun, which rules the 7th house—harmonious cooperation with brilliant victors. As a result, the Moon approached the regal sign of Leo. Thus, within three days/years, even as a child, Catherine was psychologically ready to harness the energies of the most diverse planets and (symbolically) to reign, and the progressed Moon did not experience a single draining, energy-depleting major aspect (though the aspect to Pluto could have caused unconscious rebellion). However, no other planet in Catherine II’s chart made a progressed major aspect. This suggests that, in a deep sense, achieving harmony and adapting to society was accomplished through lunar, feminine methods.

Pushkin’s progressions are significantly more active; they involve the Sun, Venus, and Mercury—the most important planets for a poet and artist—and the Sun forms a fundamental aspect for Pushkin’s character: an independent, restless square to Uranus. Pushkin was a creative person who sought the new, with a rich imagination and a complex emotional world, whose genius manifested very early—and the foundation of his uniqueness was laid already in the transits of the first three days of his life.

The third semantic layer corresponds to the symbolism of the number seven. It describes the subjective perception of the world, unique creative potentials, emotionally charged, often fantastic ideas about one’s mission, powerful motivations, but may also relate to destructive illusions. It can also be associated with rigid ethical demands (and, presumably, punishment for violating cosmic ethics). Since the number seven in our model is linked to Jupiter’s cycle, this layer of the “seed” can describe the way to achieve success (real or imagined).

In Lennon’s chart by the end of the seventh day (in transits at 17:30 GMT on October 16, 1940), the Midheaven made a trine to Saturn and Jupiter, and Mars, having made harmonious aspects to the Moon-Pluto opposition, formed a square to the Midheaven. Shortly before that, the Ascendant made a square to Pluto. Of the personal planets, only Mars formed aspects to the outer planets.

Summary: stable social status (Midheaven aspects), money (Pluto rules the 8th house), active conquest of popularity (Mars aspects to the Moon-Pluto opposition), work in a collective of friends and even broad public activity affecting the New Age audience as a whole (Mars aspect to the Moon in Aquarius in the 11th house), assertiveness and pride in one’s profession and career (Mars square to Midheaven), personal upheavals, possible collapse, pride, professional difficulties (Ascendant-Pluto and Mars-Midheaven). And the creative potential remains not fully realized (no Sun aspects)!

In Pushkin’s chart by the end of the seventh day, the Sun made semi-sextiles to Mercury and Venus, approaching the midpoint between them. On the one hand, this symbolizes the creative process; on the other, it indicates activity in social, cultural, and love contacts. Mercury ingressed into Gemini, the sign of writing and information exchange, and Venus into the sign of Leo, which added brilliance and grandeur to it. These are indications of changes in communication style, changes in the image of a beloved (remaining essentially the same in essence, she acquires Leo traits), and changes in tastes and aesthetic ideals. The Midheaven made a trine to Jupiter (success, a Jupiterian profession) and a close semi-sextile to Neptune (poetry, inspiration, mysticism). Mars made a conjunction with the Moon (irritability, heightened emotionality, and irritability) and entered a conjunction with Venus (heightened sexuality).Perhaps both of these aspects describe troubles caused by women that affect social standing and prestige (Venus rules the MC), and even threaten life (Mars, the Moon, and Venus relate to the 8th house)… Catherine II still has no ingresses into signs (except lunar ones), indicating inner stability and even conservatism (the Sun and Mars in fixed Taurus!), but Mars has passed a conjunction with the Sun in the 2nd house, symbolizing activity and even militancy, harsh measures in preserving stability (the Empire, strengthened army). Progressive Jupiter has entered the 5th house, indicating, on the one hand, resolving matters of the 10th house through the means of the 5th house, and on the other—an early premonition of a Jupiterian role: even by the age of seven, Princess Sophia dreamed of the crown—though objectively there seemed to be no prerequisites for this. Progressive IC has passed a conjunction with the Moon and Venus in Gemini—a deep, fundamental desire for domestic comfort, despite changing partners, and the acquisition of Russia as a homeland. Mercury has passed a quincunx to Uranus—an interest in philosophy, correspondence with Diderot and Voltaire, a brief period of “freethinking,” reforms, the development of intelligence, and the creation of an excellent intelligence and counterintelligence service, since Mercury co-rules the 3rd house and rules the 4th, while Uranus, being in the 9th house, rules the 12th. Mercury has also passed a sextile to the Moon and Venus—passion, talent for partnerships, and literary creativity. The aspects of the progressed Ascendant that have “accumulated” by this time (the Ascendant has reached the 15th degree of Pisces) the reader can analyze independently.

The fourth semantic layer corresponds to the symbolism of twelve; it describes the native’s life as a relatively complete and harmonious system, characterizing the mode of action in general, the path to inner harmony through life practice.

By the end of the 12th day, the Moon in Catherine II’s chart has formed a square to Saturn (stability and possibly emotional coldness) and a sextile to Pluto (power). The MC is preparing to ingress into Capricorn (hierarchy, pyramid of power, conservatism). Mercury has conjoined Mars (the army, reliance on force, harsh decisions). Venus has ingressed into Cancer (home, traditions). This is the only planet that has ingressed within twelve days! And this ingress is into the conservative, cozy, emotional, domestic Cancer. Over the years, Catherine began to display many qualities of Cancer (see memoirs about her or websites with her biography). On the other hand, the Ascendant has formed a trine to Uranus, which can be interpreted as a desire for personal freedom, unconventional behavior (what else could be expected from an open, almost innocent matriarch who cynically selected lovers, subjecting them to a “test” through trusted ladies-in-waiting!).

In Lennon’s chart: no ingresses of personal planets, of course, except the Moon, which has formed a conjunction with Saturn and Jupiter (traditional society), a conjunction with Uranus (nonconformism, public activity), and a square to Neptune (music, poetry, and also disappointment, depression). Mercury is in almost exact opposition to Uranus; the Sun is nearly on the cusp of Scorpio—a transformation of individuality and a mental insight are about to occur, but within 12 days/years they do not happen, and thus are not “encoded” in the foundation of the personality. Those who cherish the memory of Lennon may, of course, disagree with me and say that Lennon…

Of course, that is true. Pushkin simply began developing earlier and more actively, and therefore the motivations for spiritual, intellectual growth, for diverse communication and exchange of ideas were deeply ingrained in him.

In Pushkin’s chart: three ingresses into houses. The Sun has entered the 8th house (transformation imposed by society; extreme situations), Mercury into the 7th house (diverse communication, public dissemination of thoughts), and Mars into the 9th house (work with publishing, enlightenment, active promotion of worldview). These ingresses likely indicate the poet’s social activity (Mercury and Mars) and his attraction to danger and awareness of the finitude of human life (the Sun). The Descendant and Mercury in conjunction with Jupiter are favorable aspects for a writer, as well as a desire for educated partners with a broad worldview and for bright, passionate partners. Mars has formed a conjunction with Saturn—a clash with conservative forces, forced restriction of activity, difficult financial circumstances, a blow to self-esteem, a potentially dangerous aspect.

PREDICTIVE POWER OF PROPORTIONAL PROGRESSIONS

The predictive power of the anthropocentric progression “1 day = 84 years,” in my opinion, requires no proof. Let us consider the seizure of power by Catherine II in other progressions. At that time, she was 33 years old (the Moon is disregarded). To determine the corresponding moments in different progressions, one must set up proportions. For example, in a three-day progression, this proportion is as follows: 84:33 = 72:x; x = 72 × 33 ÷ 84 = 28.2857, or 28 hours 17 minutes. Adding this to the birth time gives 5:48 GT on May 3, 1729. At this time, the progressed Moon, having entered the 5th house, forms a sextile to Mars, a trine to Saturn, and a square to Pluto.

In a seven-day progression, 33 years correspond to 2 days and 18 hours. Adding this to the birth time gives 19:31 GT on May 4, 1729. Apart from Venus’s quincunx to Uranus (which describes the unexpected death of her husband under mysterious circumstances: Venus rules the 8th house of the radix, the 7th house of the relocation chart, while Uranus is in the 12th house of the radix and relocation chart and is located in the 8th house of the relocation chart), no significant aspects are found. This is understandable, as the seven-day progression, according to numerological logic, is least connected to specific events.

In a twelve-day progression, 33 years correspond to 4 days, 17 hours, and 9 minutes. The progressed chart is calculated for 18:39 GT on May 6, 1729. Mars is in conjunction with the Sun, and the Sun is in trine to Fortuna.

In proportional progressions (apart from the anthropocentric one), two options for adjusting progressed cusps can be considered. The first option is the fast one, in which the cusps correspond to the actual progressed time. For example, in a seven-day progression, they traverse the Zodiac seven times in seven days; in a twelve-day progression, twelve times in twelve days. In this case, the “fast” aspects are: progressed Descendant in conjunction with progressed Sun, MC in opposition to Saturn, and in trine to Mars.

The second option is the slow one, in which the position of the progressed cusps at the beginning of each day is taken as the basis, and the MC shifts by approximately 1° per day. In this case, in the natal chart, the Ascendant is in square to Neptune, and the IC is in conjunction with the Moon. These aspects likely do not describe the seizure of power. They are more likely related to personal relationships, home life, family matters—under such aspects, pregnancy is not ruled out. Meanwhile, in the relocation chart to St. Petersburg (transits are calculated for the coordinates of St. Petersburg!), the MC is in trine to Mars and in sextile to Saturn, which perfectly describes the situation of an armed coup.

The fast aspects of progressed cusps in the twelve-day progression indicate the likelihood of certain events occurring within a seven-year period, while the slow ones describe the quality of each seven-year period. It seems to me that analyzing proportional progressions is quite interesting and illustrative—and especially valuable when examining the formation of a child’s psyche. However, such a view of life, of course, is somewhat abstract. Practice shows that in predictive work, one cannot fully rely on any of these techniques: the foundation of prognostics remains unchanged.
