Mercury conjunction: Anxiety as the absence of thought, and yet in many cases, the presence of it. Mercury imparts a strong mental coloring to the planet it is conjunct, even when this is neither needed nor desired by the individual; for example, in a conjunction of Mercury with Venus, romantic relationships may contain so much calculation and rationality that any immediate feeling or living experience will be short-lived, especially if Mercury is stronger than Venus. Unfortunately, mental coloring is not equivalent to intelligence, as it most often reduces to common, shallow notions and stereotypes of collective consciousness and subconsciousness, which will actively influence the planet’s principle, greatly schematizing and trivializing it. The person will certainly feel this, but all attempts to escape such a deadening (each time in its own way) influence of Mercury on the planet—through expanding the sphere of its manifestations (for example, seeking new lovers in the case of Venus)—are doomed to failure, since the mind, though crude, is nevertheless flexible and can adapt in some way. Working through this conjunction primarily involves processing Mercury itself—understanding the role and meaning of mental activity as an energetic flow and planetary principles that provide general direction but do not replace them. This processing is complex, as it requires restructuring of thinking, rejecting rigid, linear social stereotypes, and learning to work with lighter and more flexible thought forms capable of adequate interaction between the Cosmos and the planet’s principle. For instance, a conjunction of Mercury with Mars, with a strong Mercury at a low level of processing, produces not a person but practically a robot, for whom any active action must first be mentally modeled, completely unable to trust the feeling and logic of their immediate energetic expressions. Mastery of this aspect brings great creative abilities, manifesting as subtle and inventive indirect mental management of the planet’s principle at moments when it is necessary. Chiron conjunction: It is better to serve God with benefit than to serve the devil without gain. A conjunction with Chiron gives the planet a special sense of humor, initially appreciated more by others than by the person themselves, since the jokes are made at their expense. This aspect creates a karmic necessity for non-standard processing of the planet’s principle, stimulated by developmental deadlocks and incomprehensible, chaotic situations in which an inner meaning is sensed but cannot be grasped while remaining in familiar life positions. For example, a conjunction of Chiron with the Moon may bring unusual or common illnesses that for some reason resist standard treatments, potentially tormenting the person until they turn to methods that official medicine considers quackery or at least highly suspicious. However, only a very harmonious conjunction with Chiron brings rapid problem resolution bordering on miracle; usually, the individual must seriously master and materialize (at least for themselves) new, initially semi-fantastical views, techniques, or methods. This often requires inner work within the subconscious programs governed by the planet. For instance, working through a conjunction of Chiron with Pluto involves reevaluating one’s views (often initially completely unconscious) on death, spiritual purification and repentance, the interconnection of personal and world karma (“the role of personality in history”), and so on. Mastery of the conjunction brings extraordinary creative abilities in the areas ruled by the planet, along with techniques and methods that create miraculous effects, yet appear entirely “scientific” and “rational” from the perspective of the next generation. The fundamental methodological principle of Chiron is: “To understand means to get used to.” However, the essential purpose of processing a planet’s conjunction with Chiron lies not merely in qualitatively new variations of the planet’s principle, but in the expansion of consciousness generated through it.
