Horary Astrology: Answering One Question

Horary astrology is a method that provides specific answers to specific questions. How it works, which questions are suitable, and how to order.

What is Horary Astrology

Horary astrology is one of the oldest and most precise methods of astrological forecasting. Unlike natal astrology, which analyzes a person’s birth chart, horary astrology constructs a chart for the moment when a specific question was asked.

The term “horary” comes from the Latin “hora” — hour. The essence of the method: when you have a pressing question, the astrologer constructs a sky chart for that exact moment and derives an answer from it.

How It Works

Horary astrology is based on the principle “as above, so below.” The moment when the question truly forms in the mind reflects the state of the Universe regarding that matter. The chart of that moment contains the answer.

Rules of the Horary Chart

  • One question — one chart. You cannot ask three questions at once.
  • The question must be sincere. If you ask a question “to test” — the chart will not work.
  • Timing matters. The chart is constructed for the moment when the astrologer received and understood the question.
  • There are “restrictions” (strictures). Certain configurations in the chart indicate that the chart cannot provide an answer.

Which Questions Are Suitable for Horary Astrology

Ideal Questions

  • “Should I accept this job offer?”
  • “Will my partner return?”
  • “Will I be able to sell my apartment by the end of the year?”
  • “Where is my lost item?” (yes, horary can find things!)
  • “Will this trip be successful?”
  • “Does this doctor/lawyer/partner suit me?”

Questions That Are NOT Suitable

  • Too abstract: “What is the meaning of my life?”
  • Questions about third parties without their consent
  • Repeating the same question (if the answer was not liked)
  • Questions about exact dates of death

How an Astrologer Reads a Horary Chart

Step 1: Determining Significators

Every question has its “representatives” in the chart. The querent is always represented by the ruler of the 1st house. The object of the question is represented by the ruler of the corresponding house (7th for a partner, 10th for career, 2nd for money, etc.).

Step 2: Analyzing Aspects

Do the significators form an aspect between them? If the ruler of the 1st house (you) moves toward a conjunction with the ruler of the 7th house (partner) — a meeting will occur. If there is no aspect between them — no.

Step 3: Additional Factors

The Moon as a co-significator for the querent, receptions (mutual reception), fixed stars, Arabic points — all of these refine the answer.

Advantages of Horary Astrology

  • No birth time needed. For a natal chart, time is critical, but for horary, it is not.
  • Specific answers. Yes/no, when, where, with whom — horary provides clear answers.
  • Speed. Analyzing a single horary chart takes 30–60 minutes.
  • Verifiability. The result can be verified — the question either comes true or not.

Historical Roots

Horary astrology was the primary method in medieval Europe and the Arab world. William Lilly (17th century) used a horary chart to predict the Great Fire of London in 1666. His book “Christian Astrology” is still considered a fundamental textbook.
