Venus quintile: When there is no love in life, there is no life at all. This aspect brings liveliness to the planet’s spheres in social contacts and aesthetic preferences, as well as spontaneity in expressions of love. In these areas, the individual will be suffocated by the routine and backwardness typical of society as a whole. Even a minor affliction of Venus can create difficulties in social interactions: on one hand, liveliness and spontaneity in others will attract the person, while on the other, their own expressions may appear less vibrant and more awkward. A strong affliction of Venus may lead to psychological blocks and complete rejection of any spontaneous behavior. At a low level, the Venus quintile produces a socially stereotyped attitude toward expressions of life in oneself and others, along with a tendency to parasitize on such expressions in social situations of the outer world—especially if the individual has low energy levels. Examples include many educators who feed (often with sadistic elements) on the emotions and spontaneous energetic expressions of children and adolescents. Similarly, lower-octave art critics play an analogous role, representing parasitic existence. Harmonious aspects to the quintile bring appreciation from others for natural liveliness and creative initiative in the planet’s spheres—yet only through careful cultivation. Mars quintile: Visible life force stands in inverse relation to its evolutionary level. At a low level and when Mars is afflicted, this aspect (especially with Mars in the 8th house) may produce sadistic pleasure from the suffering of a living being parting with life. These, however, are extreme cases. Generally, the Mars quintile somewhat softens its aggression, making the individual actively interested in the specific vitality of life expressions and inclined toward energetic overcoming of backward external and internal states in these spheres. A prominent Mars quintile to the Moon or Sun may generate a constant interest in biology; if Mars or the planet is in the 6th or 12th house, activities related to animal protection are possible. Affliction of the quintile brings awkward personal expressions of vitality and external blows against it—without proper processing, leading to painful complexes. For example, the Mars-Saturn quintile gives the individual at a moderate development level a sense of inability to harm any living being, along with personal vulnerability to external aggression—yet still considerably less than it appears to the individual, and far less than, for instance, with a Mars-Saturn square. The quintile is nonetheless a harmonious aspect, and if not strongly afflicted, it provides a certain degree of protection, at least when the individual feels and acts as a defender of life. At a low level, this aspect inclines toward a primitive understanding of life expressions—mainly as survival and sexual instincts; at a high level, it enables subtle support of life manifestations and their deep penetration into difficult, backward forms.
