Neptune in Virgo
Het Monster: Neptune in Virgo People born with Neptune in Virgo (1929–43) include the author of this book. The ideals by which my generation was raised were firmly understood as success through hard work, responsibility, and self-discipline. It is no wonder that many of us now lament the lack of a “work ethic” in much of what we see around us. We may even feel guilty when doing something “unproductive.” Many of us have become disillusioned with those ideals and have questioned: to whom and to what ideals should we be serving? Yet even those who have become dissenters tend to pursue these new ideals with more discipline than many in the younger generation.

Generation 1928–29 – 1942–43
Here Neptune is in detriment, in the domicile of Mercury and Proserpina, in the exaltation of Proserpina and the fall of Venus, in the earth element. Your creative imagination is crossed by material circumstances. Virgo rules work, and it was difficult for the young generation to find work during the post-war devastation. This is the beginning of fascism. You are restricted in your feelings; your creative abilities are poorly developed. Your generation has a tendency toward self-limitation. You are sensitive to details and acquisition, yet lack a clear concept of morality. In your generation, spiritual values are devalued, ideals are diminished, and spiritual infantilism prevails. You place great trust in science, which is grounded, fragmented into details, while showing little interest in higher ideas. You have an excessive trust in doctors, coinciding with the onset of mass illnesses—hence your attempts to build a universal health system. At best, you seek harmony in details, striving to create a perfect, harmonious system. You are characterized by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, an “overburdening” with knowledge, asceticism, a sense of higher duty, “dissolving” in work, and the ability to sacrifice everything for a cause or idea. You need much effort to realize anything. You are an empiricist; you scatter in details if everything is not united by a common idea. Common sense hinders you, and you need a measure of idealism to learn to sense and receive information not only on a verbal level. You require astrological knowledge, for then Neptune offers a transcendent outlet. In Virgo, you must serve humanity devotedly. In the worst case, you may exhibit distrust of authority (Jupiter in detriment), petty squeamishness, overly emotional fixation on scattered details, arrogance, denial of intuitive impulses, exaggerated materialism, and poor eating habits.

This generation seeks to express its spirituality and religiosity through external ritualistic details, which often have an entirely non-religious character. Here Neptune is in detriment, so spiritual and religious life is driven inward, deep into the collective and personal subconscious, while external life is subordinated to pragmatism and the characteristic Virgo ideology—concrete in form, yet abstract and idealistic in essence, entirely detached from reality. This position of Neptune is a severe test of a dense form of spiritual development; God seems to withdraw and watch how people manage without Him, which ethical and moral values will remain unshaken and which will vanish without a trace. This is a generation of atheists from birth, who find the intuitive path to God with the greatest difficulty of all Neptune placements. The unmanifested Neptune creates a strong subconscious guilt complex in Virgo, which it rationalizes as best it can (usually entirely falsely) or compensates for externally through utterly absurd destruction of certain forms (usually self-destruction of one kind or another). Strange and ineffective forms of political resistance to rigid regimes. They do not believe in the religiosity of their children, though they could learn much from them. In the individual horoscope, Neptune in Virgo is difficult to work through. In its unrefined state, it produces disgust for mysticism of any kind and a love for rational knowledge understood as a vast collection of separate facts, cataloged into an enormous hierarchical system or encyclopedia, which is worshipped with the full (permissible for this Neptune position) sense of devotion. As it is worked through, a feeling emerges (initially carefully suppressed) that beneath the surface there may be an inner meaning not expressible in rational terms, yet all subjective mystical sensations are long equated with superstition. The higher octave of Neptune in Virgo characterizes a mystic who can see the One in any detail of any dense form.

You were born during a 14-year period when people were conservative and moderate in their spiritual aspirations. People in your age group avoid contemplating the supernatural. Interest in parapsychology is considered very strange and incomprehensible among your peers. You also have a strong sense of fairness and injustice. In religious matters, you tend to place the greatest emphasis on ethics and morality. The atmosphere of conservatism and pedantry created by people in your age group gets on the nerves of those with developed imagination, and they eventually rebel against it.
Neptune’s influence on your personality: openness to new ideas and plans; inspiration, premonitions, imaginative power, idealism, penetration into the essence of others; mathematical ability; interest in psychic phenomena and mediumistic tendencies; intelligence, steadiness, and patience; morbid sensitivity, confusion, lack of plans and goals, self-disappointment, egoism, cunning; doubt or denial of intuitive impulses; exaggerated materialism; underestimation of reality and retreat from it; attempts to appear more stable than you are; lack of clear concepts of morality; poor eating habits and consumption of foods prepared with chemical additives. Creativity and imagination may be crossed by material circumstances. Difficulties may arise in finding work, as well as problems in relationships with subordinates or working conditions. There may be a tendency toward gardening and a love for fish and domestic animals.
Health issues: intestinal diseases (tuberculosis, cancer), food poisoning, nervous disorders due to overly emotional fixation on unrelated details, leading to psychosomatic illnesses; possible danger from medication and beverages.

Your generation is prone to misunderstanding life’s highest moments. You tend to idealize work and health, placing them above spiritual pursuits.
