Sesquiquadrate of the Sun: It is not enough for a person to fulfill divine will; he must also believe that it is his own. This aspect makes the person’s will in the planet’s spheres an insufficiently refined, sometimes overly crude instrument. His initiatives often turn out to be too straightforward (if the Sun is in Pisces or Cancer, the individual will tend to avoid responsibility too openly and often awkwardly, hiding within his shell); and for those inclined to self-observation, it may occasionally seem as though a foreign, deliberately coarse will is interfering with their own. A similar effect is observed in external circumstances, which are not exactly hostile or overtly obstructive (a sesquiquadrate is not a square), but rather unfavorably rigid, often actually destroying the most interesting, promising, or appealing moments in the planet’s spheres. And even when external conditions are favorable, an inner demon suddenly emerges, coarsening everything in a way that the lower will cannot overcome. The work here involves developing ideals and integrating higher will and higher direction, along with careful analysis of subconscious programs governing the interaction between the will principle and the planet: somewhere here (a clue should be sought in situations of simultaneous activity of the houses occupied by the Sun and the planet) lies deeply entrenched ego, buried in evolutionary ground far below the individual’s own evolutionary level. Processing requires awareness and transformation of this program, after which the person gains the ability for precise and subtle volitional control within the planet’s spheres. At a low level, this is the aspect of dictators possessing a rigid apparatus of external suppression, and their victims. Sesquiquadrate of Chiron: If one lies down on one’s side, the higher and lower principles become, respectively, the right and left. This aspect creates a tendency to use ideas and methods whose true meaning is inaccessible to the person, and whose side effects are unclear and unpredictable. This is a dangerous aspect, especially for individuals with a strong Saturn capable of prolonged, focused study and deep but narrow penetration into poorly understood areas. The sesquiquadrate of Chiron brings the temptation to crudely employ subtle instruments, whose power may manifest very unexpectedly, turning the person from a subject into an object of a karmic experiment. A typical example of the unprocessed sesquiquadrate of Chiron is the attempt at materialistic-“scientific” study and application of esoteric techniques involving perception of the astral and causal planes, traditionally transmitted from teacher to prepared student. Here, amateurism quickly leads to the person’s subjugation to a rigid magical egregore and loss of free will and thought (in pronounced cases, to desocialization and mental illness). Proper processing grants access to previously practically inaccessible realms of the subtle world, enabling effective work there with strange yet entirely real methods and instruments which the person perceives as physical, although their influence extends into subtle spheres.
