Semi-square Sun: A person must not only fulfill the will of God but also consider it their own. This aspect makes a person’s will in the areas governed by the planet imperfect, sometimes too crude an instrument. Their initiatives often prove overly straightforward (if the Sun is in Pisces or Cancer, the person will, accordingly, be too openly and clumsily avoiding responsibility and hiding in their shell). If inclined toward self-observation, they may sometimes feel that their will is seemingly mixed with something foreign—deliberately crude and harsh. A similar effect is observed in imperative external circumstances, which do not necessarily oppose or openly obstruct (a semi-square is not a square), but are unfavorably rigid and often actually destroy the most interesting, promising, or attractive moments for the person in the areas governed by the planet. If external conditions are favorable, an internal demon suddenly activates, harshly roughening things, which the person cannot manage at the level of their lower will. Here, the work involves forming ideals and incorporating higher will and higher direction, as well as carefully analyzing the subconscious programs governing the interaction of the principles of will and the planet: somewhere here (hints should be sought in situations of simultaneous activity in the houses occupied by the Sun and the planet) the ego is deeply entrenched, buried in evolutionary levels far below the person’s own. Processing requires awareness and transformation of this program, after which the person gains the ability to exercise precise and refined volitional control in the areas governed by the planet. At a low level, this aspect manifests in dictators who wield rigid apparatuses of external suppression and their victims.
Semi-square Chiron: If you lie on your side, the higher and lower principles become, respectively, the right and left. This aspect creates a tendency to use ideas and methods whose true meaning remains inaccessible to the person, while their side effects are unclear and unpredictable. This is a dangerous aspect, especially for people with a strong Saturn, capable of prolonged focused efforts, with deep but narrow penetration into a little-studied field. The semi-square Chiron tempts one to crudely use subtle tools whose power may prove unexpectedly strong and turn the person from a subject into an object of karmic experimentation. A typical example of the unprocessed semi-square Chiron is seen in attempts to study and apply esoteric techniques materialistically and “scientifically,” which involve seeing the astral and causal planes and have traditionally been passed down from teacher to prepared student. Here, dilettantism quickly leads to subjugation to a rigid magical egregore and the loss of free will and thought (in pronounced cases, to desocialization and mental illness). Processing opens the possibility of breakthroughs into previously inaccessible spheres of the subtle world and adequate work within them using strange yet entirely real methods and tools that the person perceives as physical, though their action extends into the subtle planes.
