Sesquiquadrate of the Sun: It is not enough for a person to fulfill God’s will; he must also believe that it is his own. This aspect makes the person’s will in the areas of the Planet an insufficiently refined, sometimes overly crude instrument. His initiatives often turn out to be too straightforward (if the Sun is in Pisces or Cancer, the individual will tend to avoid responsibility too openly and often awkwardly, hiding within his shell); and for those inclined to self-observation, it may occasionally seem that an external, deliberately coarse will is interfering with his own. A similar effect is observed in imperative external circumstances, which are not exactly openly hostile or directly obstructive (a sesquiquadrate is not a square), but rather unfavorably rigid, often actually destroying the most interesting, promising, or appealing moments in the Planet’s domains. And even when external conditions are favorable, an inner demon suddenly activates, coarsening everything in a way that the lower will cannot overcome. The work here involves forming ideals and engaging higher will and higher direction, as well as carefully analyzing subconscious programs that govern the interaction between the will principle and the Planet: somewhere here (a clue should be sought in situations of simultaneous activity of the houses occupied by the Sun and the Planet) lies deeply entrenched ego, buried in evolutionary ground far below the individual’s actual evolutionary level. Processing requires awareness and transformation of this program, after which the person gains the ability for precise and subtle volitional control in the Planet’s spheres. At a low level, this is the aspect of dictators possessing a rigid apparatus of external suppression, and their victims. Sesquiquadrate of Mars: Generally settled, if what resulted can be called relationships, and what occurred—addition. This person finds it difficult, in the Planet’s spheres, to direct his energy with flexible responsiveness to circumstances or to react sensitively to external force. Another’s aggression triggers in him a reactive response, often disproportionate in intensity and irrelevant to the matter at hand. At the same time, he may remain unresponsive to weak influences for a long time, then suddenly explode in outrage over a minor irritation, the drop that overfilled an entirely unrelated cup: subjectively perhaps justified, but objectively unjust. This person will suffer from the coarseness, energy, and aggression directed at him from the external world, finding it difficult to handle them in a sufficiently civilized manner; yet at the same time, his aggressive instincts in the Planet’s spheres will be especially crude and poorly controlled, and his activity will often, without his own awareness, take on harsh forms. For example, an unprocessed sesquiquadrate of Mars-Saturn brings, along with vulnerability to aggression, excessive rigidity in demands toward others, potentially reaching intransigence; such a person must understand that high demands toward others are usually subconsciously motivated by dissatisfaction with himself, and become aware of his own failures and shortcomings. Here, proper processing yields perfect instruments and enables functioning at high energetic vibrations.
