Sesquiquadrate of the Sun: It is not enough for a person to fulfill God’s will; he must also think that it is his own. This aspect makes the person’s will in the areas of the Planet an insufficiently refined, sometimes overly crude instrument. His initiatives often turn out to be too straightforward (if the Sun is in Pisces or Cancer, the person will tend to avoid responsibility too openly and often awkwardly, hiding within his shell); and if inclined to self-observation, he may sometimes feel as though a foreign, deliberately coarse will is mixing with his own. A similar effect is observed in external circumstances, which are not exactly openly hostile or directly obstructive (sesquiquadrate is not a square), but are unfavorably rigid and often actually destroy the most interesting, promising, or appealing moments for the person in the Planet’s spheres. And if the external situation is favorable, an inner demon suddenly activates, coarsening things in a rigid way, which the person cannot overcome at the level of lower will. The work here proceeds along the lines of forming ideals and engaging higher will and higher orientation, as well as careful analysis of subconscious programs that govern the interaction between the principle of will and the Planet: somewhere here (a clue should be sought in situations of simultaneous activity of the houses occupied by the Sun and the Planet) lies deeply entrenched ego, buried in the ground at a significantly lower evolutionary level than the person himself. Processing requires awareness and transformation of this program, after which the person gains the ability for precise and subtle volitional control in the Planet’s spheres. At a low level, this is the aspect of dictators who possess a rigid apparatus of external suppression, and their victims. Sesquiquadrate of Mercury: A person is not granted the ability to grasp the truth expressed in words. This aspect creates awkwardness of movement and coarseness of thought in the Planet’s spheres; the person, however, often does not notice this and insists stubbornly on his opinions. For example, a sesquiquadrate between Mercury and the Moon may result in poor memory and constrained thinking, yet once acquired with difficulty, knowledge and reasoning are exploited constantly by the person and serve faithfully—rightly or wrongly—wherever possible, and even where not possible, and it is very difficult to rationally convince him otherwise. The sesquiquadrate of Mercury is extremely difficult to work through, since the person, usually sensing the constraint of his intellect in the Planet’s spheres, either gives up on it entirely or, conversely, carefully represses these shortcomings into the subconscious and convinces himself of the unquestionable significance and power of his thoughts, refusing to accept any other way of thinking. At a low level of working through the aspect, but clothed with power, such a person may become an official ideologue in the Planet’s spheres, whose logical schemes rest upon two foundational pillars: Conformity and Non-Conformity to the Sacred Truth, which has been definitively discovered and irrevocably formulated in certain works. At a high level of processing, the person attains subtlety and clarity of thought, capable of precisely directing effort and carefully constructing a mental model in the Planet’s spheres, whenever and to the extent this is possible.
