Sesquiquadrate of the Sun: It is not enough for a person to fulfill divine will; he must also believe that it is his own. This aspect makes the person’s will in the planet’s spheres an insufficiently refined, sometimes overly crude instrument. His initiatives often turn out to be too straightforward (if the Sun is in Pisces or Cancer, the person will tend to avoid responsibility too openly and often awkwardly, hiding within his shell); and if inclined to self-observation, he may sometimes feel as though a foreign, deliberately coarse will is being mixed into his own. A similar effect is observed in imperative external circumstances, which are not exactly openly hostile or directly obstructive (a sesquiquadrate is not a square), but are unfavorably rigid and often actually destroy the most interesting, promising, or appealing moments for the person within the planet’s spheres; and if the external situation is favorable, an inner demon suddenly activates, coarsening things harshly, which the person cannot overcome at the level of lower will. The work here proceeds along the lines of forming ideals and engaging higher will and higher orientation, as well as careful analysis of subconscious programs governing the interaction between the will principle and the planet: somewhere here (a clue should be sought in situations of simultaneous activity of the houses occupied by the Sun and the planet) lies deeply entrenched ego, buried in evolutionary ground far below the person’s actual evolutionary level. Processing requires awareness and transformation of this program, after which the person gains the ability for precise and subtle volitional management within the planet’s spheres. At a low level, this is the aspect of dictators possessing a rigid apparatus of external suppression, and their victims. Sesquiquadrate of Jupiter: The very concept of matter is profoundly idealistic. This aspect brings formal expansion within the planet’s spheres; here the person may be interested in scientific achievements, philosophical generalizations, or simply other developmental directions, but tends to understand all this quite straightforwardly, at a low level exclusively from egocentric and pragmatic positions. With poor processing, a peculiar rigid pride may emerge, where the person does not accept compliments beyond the image he has established for himself, yet demands their constant confirmation; this behavioral pattern is a reaction to a subconscious feeling of lacking true greatness, the effortless and natural breadth of possibilities characteristic, for example, of a trine to Jupiter: thus a colonel looks upon a general. This person tends to assume the role of benefactor, philanthropist, or patron within the planet’s spheres, but his capabilities often do not match the environment’s needs, and he must learn to account for this; here mistakes are far more visible than with a semisquare to Jupiter, and blows to self-esteem are more painful. Proper processing enables effective, competent, and timely assistance to others, genuine expansion of possibilities within the spheres ruled by the planet, but to achieve this, one must learn to see in one’s instruments not only decorative finishes, but also the quality of their sharpening.
