Astrology Through the Lens of Mythology – Leo

The time has come for the mythological Leo.

The lion, king of beasts, whose name is given to the corresponding Zodiac sign, and whose golden mane is associated with the Sun — a traditional symbol of power and strength. Sunlight was so commonplace that it never struck human imagination as strongly as a storm, and so people did not immediately grasp the significance of solar energy. Unlike the god of thunder and lightning, who acts as a conduit of higher forces and divine fire, the solar god embodies primarily his own inner power. The image of the Sun is linked to the rise of empires, whose brilliance dims former petty kingdoms. The Sun moves across the sky like a wheel, which becomes its universal symbol. Like a wheel, one side of which touches the Earth and the other the Sky, the Sun embodies the fullness and wholeness of existence. This associates the solar archetype with the invention of the wheel and the spread of wheeled chariots. The speed of chariots allowed vast territories to be traversed, enabling the unification of lands and laying the foundation for the formation of empires and the idea of sole rule. By realizing the principle of likeness between earthly and celestial, the Sun itself serves as the source of all things and symbolizes the creation within the natural Universe of its own world, founded on rational laws. The Sun defines the boundaries of individual human freedom and creative life — and this new personal definition shapes the concept of each person’s individual soul. The Sun grants people the energy for creativity.

Born under the sign of Leo, a person equally understands both the lofty manifestations of spirit and the power of matter: like Ra, who daily surveys the sky, the Earth, and its depths, he sees in all things a single divine essence and is therefore inclined toward magnanimity and indulgence. Leos love art and strive to illuminate the world with the brilliance of colors. In the Zodiac circle (in the sequence from Pisces), the sign of Leo corresponds to the golden ratio, which determines the proper proportions of earthly beauty. Yet creative realization requires not personal, but transpersonal will. If, however, a person appropriates the gift of life bestowed upon them, the result of such a worldview is the cardinal sin of humanity — pride and individualism, which restricts their existence within the confines of their own perspective and robs them of the ability to create, much like the gods cast down the proud Bellerophon, even his steed Pegasus. In the conflict between the individual and society, the individual often suffers defeat, like Phaethon, who once rode the golden chariot into the sky, if it does not take responsibility for others. Only by accepting this responsibility does a person become king of nature and a son of the Sun.
