Astrology Through the Lens of Mythology – Sagittarius

Continuing the mythological theme we have — SAGITTARIUS

The thunder god who sends fertile rain—personification of the planet Jupiter—borrows the image of the father of the gods and a formidable ruler, dazzling with arrow‑like lightning, and sometimes even the name, of the god of the clear Sky. Thus the name Zeus is a transformation of the ancient name Dios, and moreover its root comes from the name Jupiter (“father of light”). In mythic consciousness arises the image of a king‑herdsman who, in the form of a ritual, communicates with elemental forces and, appealing to the heavens, can summon rain. Most often the head of the pantheon becomes the thunder‑bringer. The thunder‑bringer possesses the four elements: he, like the centaur Sagittarius, stands on the four legs of the earth and releases the arrow of his thought, which reaches the all‑seeing heavens and gives him knowledge of the laws of nature. The position of the thunder god between Sky and Earth is associated with elevated places, especially open ones where lightning strikes most often, and the Indo‑European name of the thunder‑bringer derives from the word “pergunos” — “rock” (hence the Russian name of the god Perun). Historically, the Jovian mythos leads humanity beyond clan relations and corresponds to the beginning of state unions that are based not on kinship but on ideology. Sometimes the sign Sagittarius, like Zeus, upholds the social order achieved by culture, and at other times it asserts a new worldview. From the king of the gods Sagittarius inherits responsibility for everything placed under his control, and this sometimes allows one to see in his character the authority of a superior. This sign understands social structure so well that it dares to oppose society, taking an active stance toward it—and this affirms him as a reformer. He carries his views openly, and the calling of the mediator urges him to convey his concept to others and give it to society. Looking at life from above, Sagittarius fights the chaos of life, organizing it with word and thought, like Marduk who defeated Tiamat. His honesty and justice preserve the lawful order of peace. Sagittarians possess knightly traits. Relying on ideals revealed in traditions and rituals, Sagittarius creates a solid foundation for the present and brings confidence in the future to the world. Expanding horizons, Sagittarius runs from the shackles of ordinary existence and the native home, travels widely and is interested in various cultures. Like the fruitful rain of the thunder‑bringer that draws power from the Sky, the thought of Sagittarius fertilizes the dry soil of pragmatic Earth with the spiritual values of the God. But just as the thunder god must battle to let the heavenly moisture reach the earth, Sagittarians do not find it easy to bring their intentions to a qualitative result. Seeing their ideals of good in action is the primary task of this sign. (author A. Hromova, based on Semir and V. Vetash “Astrology and Mythology”)
