Mercury Square: If a thought comes to mind but does not take verbal form, it means it was poorly invited. The Mercury square creates significant difficulties for a person in interacting with the planet’s principle through rational thought and language. Interpretation here depends on which planet in the square is stronger. If Mercury prevails, the person will consider their (sometimes others’) thoughts and reflections on the matter to be exceptionally important and reasonable, even though they often severely distort the planet’s principle, as the person does not fully understand it rationally—though others may grasp it better. If the planet in the square is stronger, then overall thinking will be under its disharmonious influence, becoming distorted, trivialized, narrowed, and so on. In general, the Mercury square is characterized by a strong mental preoccupation with the planet’s issues and spheres of influence, leading to distorted understanding—fragmented yet sometimes accurate and deep in parts, but overall unsatisfactory. The person may struggle to believe this, even after repeated experiences. The level of processing the aspect is evident in the quality of speech when the person discusses the planet’s issues (if they speak calmly, i.e., through Mercury rather than Mars). At a low level of processing, the person often tends to lecture others to assert themselves, without fully grasping the subject. Working through this requires systematically filling gaps in mental perception of the planet’s principle and avoiding direct mental pressure on it, which leads to crude profanation (as well as a tendency toward speculation). Next, one must learn to overcome their unnatural dullness when trying to understand something new about the planet (subconscious resistance may be intense, even leading to severe depression or an inability to read text) and resist emotional resistance to growth in deep understanding. Mercury Square Neptune: A great deal of inner honesty is needed to recognize its absence. This is one of the most challenging aspects. The Neptune square distorts meditation, often of a lower order, creates an unclear attraction to the planet’s principle while simultaneously providing a poor understanding of it—more accurately, a false understanding, illusions, and mistakes that the person struggles to believe and even harder to let go of. Neptune deceives the person, the person deceives the world and themselves, then sees part of this deception and stops believing—just in case—in anything, including themselves, though not for long (or rather, partially), before deceiving themselves and the world again. This can lead to despair, vices, or, conversely, awaken higher aspirations and call the person to God. The outcome is hard to predict, but in any case, the person should always remain vigilant and never consider any boundary conquered once and for all. In its lower expression, this aspect can feed on dirty meditations (alcohol, drugs, family scandals, etc.), and re-educating it is not easy. The Neptune-Saturn square can create a perverse pleasure in one’s inability to act, trapping the person in a cycle: brief concentrated effort ending in nothingness—prolonged meditation on their own worthlessness, with a masochistic undertone, likely involving others in this cycle. (In general, squares involving higher planets are aspects of dark teachers, especially with a mystical or psychological slant.) Karmically, this aspect signifies the need to work through self-deception and lower meditations (“vices”) through the planet’s principle, as its inclusion makes the corresponding subconscious programs highly pronounced. Processing this is difficult and requires abandoning all lower meditations (including sweet self-accusations) and consistently engaging in honest, constructive work in areas related to the planet. Involving Pluto and, to some extent, working through Saturn can help. At a high level, the person grasps the subtlest manifestations of the planet’s principle and its connection to the principle of cosmic love as it manifests in external reality and the souls of specific people. This can make them a mystic, preacher, or saint, but they may still struggle to free themselves from irrational feelings of guilt toward the world in the planet’s spheres.
