Sun-Square Mercury
(Transit Sun → Natal Mercury)
Avesalom Podvodny. Aspects
Sun’s semisquare: Fate places a person under strict conditions only from a state of complete dead end. This aspect imparts rigid forms of possible volitional expressions in the areas ruled by the Planet, and certain (fated) types of imperative situations to which the person will have to adapt, even though it will be unpleasant. For example, the Sun-Venus semisquare may bring high predestination (that is, a limited number of possible storylines) in social and romantic relationships, where the plot suddenly begins to exceed expected boundaries, and the person, by their own will, diligently forces it back within those limits, often distorting and maiming their own and others’ feelings and destinies, without understanding, without understanding, without understanding. At a low level of integration, the Sun’s semisquare is a very difficult aspect—this represents, in the Planet’s spheres, a form of servitude disguised as personal initiative, at least in terms of one’s initiatives and reactions to external imperative circumstances. Here, imagination is lacking; however, on the other hand, in certain cases this person can be relied upon more than anyone else, and with harmonious major aspects between the Sun and the Planet, they may become the ideal executor of clear and precise instructions and orders. There is a characteristic subconscious feeling of constrained will and limited initiative, which gradually weakens (but never fully disappears) as the person begins engaging with issues in the Planet’s sphere that are not personally connected to them; however, initially this will manifest awkwardly, with possible traumas both in the external world and psychological ones, along with a complex of one’s own inappropriateness, awkwardness, and inadequacy. Mercury’s semisquare: Artificial intelligence is always irresponsible intelligence. At a low level, this aspect indicates a hidden backwardness of thinking that simultaneously gives an impression of agility, sometimes powerful. A person may speak logically and correctly, yet in their speech there will be sensed some colossal distortions, as if they are imbuing their words with another, entirely incorrect meaning. The individual themselves, however, will not notice this, just as they will not perceive the profanation they subject others’ mental images and information to upon reception, within the Planet’s spheres. For example, the Mercury-Mars semisquare will produce a very limited set of mental frameworks through which the person interprets and directs any forms of activity and energy—both their own and others’, often restricted to categories such as “good-bad, own-foreign, friend-enemy,” making it impossible for them to recognize and account for the dual nature of any activity. At the same time, their speech (especially if Mercury is harmoniously aspected) may at first glance sound powerful, convincing, and logical, demolishing any obstacles, including truth. Integration requires awareness of the limitations of one’s mental frameworks and the construction, upon their (stable!) foundation, of structures serving purposes (and inhabitants) other than those initially anticipated; at a high level, this becomes spirit—that which lies beyond thought and logic, yet to which both thought and logic must lead, like signposts guiding the seeker to the treasure hidden within the labyrinth.
