# Sun in Cancer
Het Monster: Sun in Cancer
I hide tenderness and love
Behind a hard shell,
And let my angry image
Not frighten you at all.
You must know for sure
That you are always mine,
And I will never let you go.
Imagine a crab—a small creature in a hard shell that, when discovered, quickly scurries sideways across the sand to hide. Another time, it extends its claw, grabs its prey, and holds on tightly. Now look at my version of this creature, which gazes at you with big trusting eyes from the drawing.
Your little Cancer is a very sensitive child who may sometimes hide behind a tough exterior to conceal their hurts or insecurities. Never doubt that strong emotions live in this child’s heart. From the very beginning, the Cancer baby will absorb feelings and respond to them. At this age, they need plenty of gentle hugs and “quality time” connecting with the caring parental figure. The Cancer toddler will likely be especially close to their mother (or whoever cared for them from the start) and may resist care from others.
Reliability is extremely important to them—security in being cared for and fed when hungry. Yet from the very beginning, you may sense that your little Cancer is also caring for *you*! They intuitively pick up on your emotions, as well as the feelings of others around them, and personalize them. If, for example, you are irritated—even if you don’t show it openly—your child will sense it and may think you are angry *with them*. Be open about your feelings with this child. Make sure they know your moods aren’t about them.
Your Cancer needs reassurance and to know what’s going on. Moody behavior, irritability, withdrawal, or misbehaving are most often signs of insecurity and/or misinterpreting the feelings they’ve absorbed from others.
Your child will be a master mimic of your traits—sometimes amusingly so, sometimes making you cringe when they reflect back exactly what you don’t like about yourself. Your little Cancer may need reassurance that it’s okay to be different from you and to have their own feelings. They need warm, positive contact with other adults so they don’t identify *only* with you; such contact will broaden their confidence.
Home, family, and tradition are very important to Cancer. This child will love all family celebrations, parties, and gatherings and will remember them forever. Your little Cancer needs a reliable personal space in the home that belongs to them. There, they will likely collect and store more things than you might like. Saving things is part of the Cancer drive for security. They will also be very thrifty with money—usually the most frugal of all the zodiac signs.
Be aware that hoarding is an external symbol of an inner need for emotional security. This child needs abundant praise, reassurance, and a calm, reliable environment. In return, you will have a very loving, tender, unselfish child who will maintain a close bond with you throughout your life.
Indubala. Planets in Signs. (Indian tradition)
Sun in this sign indicates a person capable of being kind, sincere, and heartfelt, and points to their love for solemn rituals. This person is attached to their home or enjoys life surrounded by nature or luxurious settings. Cancer is a movable and “watery” sign, and these people have an ability to conduct business with liquid products or engage in activities related to travel. They love living near water, swimming, and enjoy trips to the tropics or overseas.
A person with Sun in Cancer is very sincere in their preferences. They have a tenacious, sensitive emotional nature. Feelings play a large role in their decision-making. These people are shy, their manners reserved, yet they are receptive to new ideas and insightful. They usually understand what is good and right, but sometimes overestimate their own ideas.
In their career or public position, such a person experiences ups and downs. They are thrifty, conservative people of a cheerful disposition. They are attached to home and family; they love pleasure, fun, and entertainment; they have a strong imagination and good memory. Sometimes they suffer from stomach disorders, weak digestion, or constipation. They are wealthy, and their character is independent. They may sometimes express themselves roughly, but their mind and mental abilities are quite bright—they simply know when and whom to inspire with energetic expressions.
They have the makings of good teachers, with a heightened sense of truth. They are capable of sacrificing their own interests in working for the benefit of others. They may suffer from fatigue caused by travel.

This is the last sign of the first Zone of “Creation.” It is the primary manifestation of Water, a sign under the rulership of the second luminary, the Moon, which largely shapes the psychological and emotional inner structure of this sign. It belongs to the second quadrant, which includes Cancer, Leo, and Virgo. It reflects the psychological structure of people with a juvenile nature. To some extent, this is the psychology and perception of the world characteristic of youth. Water embodies the functions of a passive and reflective principle; it becomes the cause of inner transformation, change, mutation, and transmutation. People born under the sign of Cancer are driven by a desire for inner perfection and self-analysis. Cancers possess a delicate inner life; they are constantly changing, just as the Moon in the sky is constantly changing: it is born, grows, reaches its peak, wanes, and dies. Cancers are highly vulnerable; this is the most vulnerable sign of the Zodiac. Therefore, as a form of protection against such heightened sensitivity, Cancers need to build a shell. They require it to shield themselves from the deep emotionality inherent in their nature. And most often, as a reaction to this emotionality, Cancers project an image of strength, though internally they are very weak.
Cancer is a highly feminine, receptive, “yin” sign; they take more than they give, meaning lunar qualities prevail in them. Cancers love novelty, change, and travel; they are restless people and are deeply attached to their loved ones. Of all the signs of the Zodiac, Cancer is the most domestic, the most home-loving sign. Family holds the highest place in the hierarchy of Cancer’s values. They are attached to their home, to the past, and love retrospection. If your Sun is in this wonderful sign, your consciousness is often shaped by the history of your family, culture, ethnicity, or nation. You are likely to possess heightened psychic abilities. Mediumistic abilities may also manifest. Among Cancers, there are many mediums and great occultists. You reveal to us the mysteries of the Soul, both your own and others’, the secrets of our subconscious. It is known that Cancers enjoy the company of their own sign, which is not a common pattern: typically, people of the same sign interact with tension and quickly grow weary of each other, but this does not apply to Cancers—they can communicate for long periods productively.
You remember the details of your past, your childhood, and love to immerse yourself in childhood memories. You have excellent intuition, which helps you preserve your individual core in all aspects of life. You possess a delicate psychic nature and a wide range of talents, as well as a refined perception of the emotional world. This naturally gives you the talent of artists, writers, poets, and psychologists. Examples include artists El Greco, Pissarro, Corot, Degas, and writers such as Hemingway. Many educators excel at understanding and working with children (e.g., Ushinsky).
The lowest level in Cancers manifests the worst traits of any person: deceitfulness, cunning, and vindictiveness. You will always achieve what you want, but you do so not actively, but passively, waiting for the right moment. Rest assured, a Cancer will get what they desire. Do not try to pressure them, as they cannot tolerate it—they will immediately retreat inward. Therefore, if you plan to interact with a Cancer, act indirectly, through hints, and avoid pressing them in a Leo-like, direct, and open manner. Cancers can be tempted, as water signs are susceptible to any influence and temptation. As a water sign, Cancers often work with liquids, and it is noted that many Cancers work in dairy factories—this is their favorite workplace. Among Cancers, there are many bartenders, especially night bartenders, as Cancers feel best at night.
At their lowest level, Cancers can be swindlers, embezzlers, sadists, cynics, and, in addition to everything else, very noisy. What could your developmental dynamics as a Cancer be? Cancers, as a rule, are always rooted in tradition. For a high-level Cancer, authority lies in what belongs to a distant past. You move toward the present and the future through the past. Retrospectiveness is a natural backdrop for your perception, and, as a rule, what is new for you is well-forgotten old—this is their creed. Thus, you always rely on the past, on traditions, on family; you seem to step backward. If we speak of the country of Cancer, it is undoubtedly India—a country deeply connected to its profound past, a land of deep spiritual traditions. Among the Hindus, we find subtlety, intuition, and a connection with the element of Water, which symbolizes mystery.
If we speak of the problems of Cancers, it is to harmonize their expressions, which often manifest in distorted and perverse forms. Often, your will and the impulsive energy of Cancer are in conflict with your emotional world. Frequently, you subconsciously strive for public or social authority without having sufficient grounds in your inner structure. Therefore, it is important for you, from childhood, to choose high benchmarks and spiritual authorities for your development. For you, the unconditional challenge is the formation of your inner spiritual world, the construction of a spiritual core—something we always emphasize as the foundation of every individual’s personality, but it is especially crucial for Cancers with their changeability and vulnerability.
Het Monster. Planets in the Signs of the Zodiac
June 22 – July 22. Cancer is an extremely sensitive, intuitive nature. Lives more in dreams than in the real world. Prefers a slow, calm pace of life. In the face of life’s troubles, “hides in its shell.” Often identifies with the heroes of favorite films or novels, long retains the imprint of childlike naivety, loves fantasy and everything strange in general. Constantly on guard: afraid of touching sensitive points. Deeply attached to family, especially the mother. Seeks a protector, an example to follow, and the company of benevolent people. Has a highly developed sense of beauty. Believes in luck, fortunate finds, and a bright future. Realizes abilities in imagination, music, literature, and cinema. The influence of its planet, the Moon, brings public recognition—especially if the Moon is in the 1st, 10th, or 12th house. Cancer is a gourmet; often a connoisseur of restaurants. Handles work failures poorly; upon failure, withdraws into themselves, though in principle they are naturally capable of charming others. In mature years, fate usually becomes more favorable toward them. Highly vulnerable and afraid of ridicule. Cancer is an emotional type whose health fluctuates sharply with even minor deviations from their usual lifestyle. They experience numerous minor ailments; sometimes they imagine them, but they still depress them greatly. However, fatigue depresses them the most. Cancer needs prolonged sleep: for them, it is the best therapy. They love their bed, their room, their “shell,” which shields them from the troubles of the outside world. They have a tendency to absorb the worries, troubles, and grievances of those around them: it becomes easier for others, but harder for Cancer. They should avoid sad and sick people. Among the elements, iodine is indicated, as it activates the thyroid gland and cell renewal while helping to maintain figure. Dairy products are recommended. Among herbs, lemon balm is beneficial. For a female Cancer, pregnancy helps restore balance. Rest by the sea and hydrotherapy are recommended. Alcohol and any other stimulants are contraindicated.

Rak. The ruler is the Moon. A consistent Cancer.
A Cancer person. “There is no bottom. It’s just that they don’t let you go deeper.” S.Ye.
If the elements of Fire, Earth, and Air can sometimes be seen in a person’s character in their pure form, the situation with the element of Water is not so simple. Regarding Cancer, it can be said this way: the more strongly this sign is represented in a person’s character, the more they strive to escape your gaze behind their solid chitinous shell. This shell can take the form of a house, apartment, office (a homebody Cancer), certain rigid communication frameworks that they almost never cross, the manner of hypnotizing with their gaze in unpleasant situations for them, and in all cases, their deep, inscrutable eyes where no bottom can be seen. These eyes could be called enigmatic if there were a greater mystery in them than the mystery of any human soul, which, as they say, contains the whole world. There is nothing else (of course): however, Cancer embodies the principle of essential perception and transformation, and its eyes show that a certain (often very small) piece of its soul perceives the surrounding world and transforms in accordance with what it perceives, because to perceive means to change oneself.
In Cancer (the zone of creation), the element of Water is in its first manifestation, and its goal is the essential perception of the world—everything as a whole—and the subsequent essential transformation of oneself. However, in a real being, there must be a certain stability, so the subconscious of a person with a strong Cancer influence develops complex defense mechanisms that protect their owner from a significant part of the environment, narrowing their perception and thereby ensuring the stability of their psyche.
Changes in the psyche, the restructuring of the subconscious program, are subjectively experienced deeply emotionally (in fact, deep emotions are precisely the signs of psyche restructuring), so when Cancer, despite its defense mechanisms, perceives something, it perceives emotionally, and what it has perceived becomes transformed over time.
In the zone of creation, the elements are not yet aware of themselves, so Cancer, as a rule, does not formulate its task for itself as described above, and much less does it ever set itself the goal of changing the surrounding world (this is what distinguishes it from Scorpio).
However, in real life, having essentially perceived something, by the law of empathy, Cancer not only changes itself but also leaves its mark on the perceived object. In the case of a strong Cancer, this indirect influence can be very significant. Therefore, Cancers (like all water signs) are born psychologists. They have the ability to simply listen attentively to a person, and that is already a lot, even if Cancer says nothing at the end: the problem may disappear or resolve itself simply as a result of the very act of telling it. Cancer understands what it needs to understand, does not judge, and silently inspires. However, Cancer is not necessarily always silent; being a cardinal sign, it can be overly fussy or talkative, but always remaining within the framework of its shell.
The fact is that one of its essential problems is the problem of emotional self-expression. It is connected to the fact that the subconscious program that protects against essential perception (“the shell” of Cancer) simultaneously prevents it from essential and emotional self-expression: the gate does not let water flow in either direction.
At the same time, the expression of its essence and emotions is needed both by Cancer itself and by others: there is far too much emotion in the world, and a significant part of it is concentrated precisely in Cancers.
The depth of Cancer’s perception imposes corresponding karmic obligations on it, which it rarely fulfills. There is always a temptation to hide in its shell, whether needed or not—more precisely, when the situation requires something to be perceived, but it does not want to. Cancer knows very well what “tasty morsel” it has and is not inclined to offer it to every passerby.
On the other hand, blocking perception in responsible situations is one of the main karmic crimes, but while Aries is inattentive, Gemini are superficial and may indeed fail to notice something, and this will be forgiven to them, Cancer will never be forgiven: there are depths into which no one but Cancer can peer.
It should be emphasized that Cancer, representing the element of Water in the zone of creation, does not actually realize its transformative power, nor does it strive to change the world; its karmic task is much more complex—to change itself.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon. Cancers respect their mistress; therefore, on the night of the full moon, they crawl out onto the sandy shore to greet her.
The Moon moves through the Zodiac much faster than other planets; therefore, Cancers are very changeable, but they especially easily fall into melancholy: the Moon governs the general background of the subconscious, and there is always a slight sadness there, because human needs are never fully satisfied.
On the other hand, having a strong subconscious, Cancer easily tunes into the subconscious of those around them, making them unparalleled empaths, though also very insidious, because almost imperceptibly, they can instantly retreat into their shell and pretend that no intimate contact occurred a moment ago, that they have nothing to do with it, and that they have only just entered the room with you.
The insidiousness of Cancer’s subconscious for Cancer itself also lies in the fact that, while putting up powerful blocks on the surface and creating the illusion of invulnerability and resistance to external influences for Cancer (and superficial observers), it often leaves Cancer completely defenseless against subtle and indirect influences, from which it is very difficult to protect itself.
At the same time, the Moon gives Cancer incomparable empathic satisfaction in fulfilling the needs of those close to them: Cancer loves to feed them, take care of them, fulfill their desires, and even whims. It can act as an excellent tempter and even a multifaceted dark teacher.
The confinement of Saturn in Cancer also greatly influences its subconscious. This is where its inner rigidity originates (i.e., the rigidity of subconscious programs), most often expressed in extreme and incomprehensible stubbornness over trivial matters for outsiders (in reality, you have indirectly touched a very rigid subconscious program).
Saturn also gives Cancer a certain inner coldness and rigidity, which it needs simply as protection for its overly vulnerable psyche.
Regarding Saturn, Cancer’s task is very difficult: it must bring this rigidity into consciousness, realize its function, and transform persistence. Only then can the wisdom of Saturn manifest; otherwise, Cancer’s depth will remain emotionally unconscious and unable to realize itself in constructive work. On the other hand, even unworked Saturn provides Cancer with a certain stability, which externally manifests as stubbornness.
The author does not intend to describe the difference between Cancer’s lunar melancholy and Saturn’s, leaving this to psychological astrology.
Thanks to Saturn’s confinement, Cancer is subconsciously attached to roots, the past—personal and historical; accordingly, it prefers to build upon or rebuild subconscious programs rather than destroy and create new ones.
The culmination of Jupiter in Cancer presents a developed Cancer in a completely different light. Having understood itself and grasped the essence of the world, Cancer realizes its higher mission and begins to create religious and philosophical teachings of an existential nature, guiding a group of students, teaching them all the intuitive knowledge of the mysteries of the subconscious that it has accumulated in the course of its spiritual progress.
In its unworked form, it gives Cancer strong inner arrogance toward other signs that are not as deep and intuitive as itself.
The culmination of Neptune in Cancer also gives a kind of spiritual teacher, more mystical than the Jupiterian one. In its highest octave, Cancer is given a mystical sense of the Universe in the very depths of the human soul (the identity of Atman and Brahman) and cosmic love for humanity, perceived as part of itself. Such a spiritual teacher is more turned inward than the Jupiterian one.
For the average Cancer, the culmination of Neptune gives a tendency toward deception and self-deception, distortion of perception and expression, and difficulties in communicating with its own subconscious.
Mars’ fall in Cancer does not imply weakness for this sign at all. It rather indicates a tendency toward indirect actions and subtle influence. Cancer’s deep emotional nature and simultaneous restraint prevent Mars’ energy from manifesting directly. In its worked-through form, this becomes the most valuable quality of high spiritual teachers who influence students through precisely measured, delicate touches. In its unworked form, it manifests as cunning, excessive emotionality, and internal voluntarism that the person cannot and does not want to overcome.
Situation of Cancer. Water situations are difficult to describe; from the perspective of Aries and Gemini, they seem almost nonexistent. A typical sign of a Cancer situation is a sense of mystery, where only a slight touch is felt, while the rest remains hidden in unknown depths. A Cancer situation is often accompanied by sudden collective silence, after which group enlightenment may follow. These are moments when the collective suddenly turns inward, its members feeling a direct connection with one another and with something invisible and mysterious that guides them toward a shared goal—what this textbook calls the collective egregore. When the Cancer situation ends, the collective feels either more united or, conversely, fragmented. If an outsider finds themselves in a Cancer situation, they feel uneasy and consciously understand nothing, even if external words and actions appear ordinary; behind them, however, lies a meaning understood only by the collective, and even then not fully.
In a harmonious Cancer situation, there is warmth and comfort—even a delicious meal (a family dinner or advice)—but it is always filled with inner meaning, a higher purpose closely tied to influencing the collective or its individual members. A true family dinner carries great moral and educational significance, even (and especially) if children are not being spied on for bad table manners.
A disharmonious Cancer situation may appear calm on the surface, but its individual members are subjected to such a disruptive flow that their feelings can be compared to those of a person undergoing interrogation (with a psychological nuance) by secret police, in the hands of the mafia (which is generally very drawn to Cancer, so to speak, a little family), or even within a family. Yet again, an external observer will understand nothing or will misinterpret everything entirely.
Francis Sakoyan. Planets in the Signs of the Zodiac
Sun in Cancer promises a karmic program that is very difficult for the average Western person—raised in a Gemini-dominated civilization near university cities and other hotbeds of materialism—to grasp. No matter what profession a solar Cancer chooses, fate’s hand persistently turns their attention inward, while their subconscious equally persistently tries to push consciousness aside and seize control of their will. No matter what career they pursue, they must embrace the subject with their entire being, saturate it to the depths of their soul—only then will they derive satisfaction from their work and accomplish something meaningful. For them, the quality of work is measured by their own essential transformations: in a constructive variant, they grow spiritually, their consciousness and perception expand; in an unconstructive one, their shell hardens and becomes rigid.
The Sun sharply increases Cancer’s responsibility for their fate, accentuates their negative inclinations (which sometimes activate almost involuntarily), and complicates any external activity by scattering attention and redirecting it toward inner life. Only when Cancer allows a karmically destined part of their inner problems to surface will the Sun grant them the ability to work relatively constructively in the world. Individual will is poorly suited to resolving one’s own inner riddles and problems, which makes the Sun’s position a difficult one.
Those with the Sun in Cancer are both mobile and steadfast; your challenge lies in understanding the necessity of movement while resisting the urge to abandon tested traditions. Hence, the typical Cancerian approach: one step forward, two steps back. Their essence is directed inward; first, everything inside must settle and align before they venture outward. They crave protection. External pressure does not help, as they possess the art of passive resistance. People with the Sun in Cancer always maintain a certain distance from others due to an inner shyness. They open up only after getting to know someone well and feeling secure in them. They are highly vulnerable. Internally, they are prepared to make great sacrifices for those they trust. Yet they are contradictory: conservative and progressive at once, friendly yet maintaining distance. They better understand historical issues and matters of long past days; everyday life, with its ever-changing fashions, is perplexing to them, and thus their actions often seem illogical, heavily dependent on mood. They are truly creatures of mood—highly sensitive and judgmental, with keen intuition, understanding without words.
By nature, they are peaceful people unless their feelings are wounded. They have exceptional memory, though they may confuse dates and names, yet important memories tied to key emotions and actions remain vivid. Their intuition is highly developed. They love music, are sentimental, and may cry over small things, yet in truly tragic events, they reveal nothing outwardly. In daily life, they are meticulous; small details matter greatly to them. They judge others’ flaws harshly, but if those flaws are acknowledged, Cancerians can melt.
They enjoy affection but not excessive tenderness. They have a strong bond with family. They are highly vulnerable and fear ridicule. They rarely risk money, avoid gambling, and thus do not betray those who trust them. They are kind and diplomatic—unless offended. They can only be guided with kindness; they dislike unsolicited advice. They fear responsibility but perform important tasks reliably, punctually, and successfully when entrusted to them. Their professional path is uneven, with ups and downs in their careers. They prefer professions requiring intuition and care (art, social assistance—nurses, home care workers, insurance, child-rearing, charity). They can deeply empathize with others’ fates (artists) and have a strong sense of justice (excellent arbitrators).
They enjoy nurturing but do not spoil children; with them, they can even appear strict—superficially. Cancerians are homebodies, though travel appeals to them, they always strive to return home as soon as possible. If forced to stay abroad, they settle in and feel at home. In love, they are receptive to beauty and sensuality, but the most important thing for them is feeling. Without feeling, no lasting union is possible. They are passive, preferring to be charmed rather than to charm. Family means everything to them; home is their fortress, and they may even become domestic tyrants. In public, Cancerians are quieter than still water, but at home, they transform. The house is kept to their taste, and they set the order of family life. Yet this domestic tyranny often surfaces only on a silver wedding anniversary.
They are highly demanding of a partner: seeking loyalty, equality, mobility, and modesty. No one—not even close friends—should be told about their relationship; an incautious word can jeopardize everything. Dangers arise from their vulnerability, from overestimating their own worth. If others do not acknowledge them, they feel wronged and abandoned, and their pride suffers. They tend to exaggerate the suffering dealt by fate. They can be harsh if a partner disappoints them, though they suffer most from their own cruelty.
Physically, they are of slight build, and digestive disorders and ailments of the digestive organs are common.
You have a strong emotional attachment to the past, to your family, to childhood, to places tied to a sense of security and freedom from worry about tomorrow. It is vital for you to maintain a connection with your family and cultural heritage, to strengthen family foundations. You are characterized by devotion, loyalty, sentimentality, and responsibility toward all that is dear to you—be it a person, an object, or familiar places. You are a good educator, treating people with compassion and always ready to help them both materially and spiritually. You enjoy being needed, especially by those you love. You are attached to the home where you live; you need to feel understood and accepted there. You care more about people and their feelings than about power, career, or social status. Kindness, care, and tenderness impress you more than any worldly honors.
For the most part, you are an emotional person. Your views are shaped more by feelings and personal subjective experience than by reason, logic, or abstract principles. It is difficult for you to judge life situations impartially and objectively, as your judgments are usually woven with personal sympathies and preferences. You perceive life very personally, sometimes building a wall around yourself to shield against painful contacts or the possibility of rejection.
Deep down, you are shy and vulnerable, prone to mood swings—emotional highs and lows. In life, you need time and space to retreat, reflect, dream, and recharge. Otherwise, you become irritable and dissatisfied with those around you. You act instinctively, without recourse to reason, and love to surrender fully to the power of creativity, where you can express your feelings and imagination. You enjoy cooking—here, too, your creative nature shines, along with your natural ability to nurture and care for the human stomach. You also love music, which evokes emotions words can hardly convey.
Your greatest strengths are compassion for people, heightened sensitivity, and a vivid imagination. Your weaknesses lie in your inability to let go of the past and move forward; you are confined by your circle, full of superstitions, and prone to self-pity when life presents difficulties.
