Mars-Saturn Square
(Transit. Mars → Natal Saturn)
Various sources for a child’s horoscope
Your child has endurance and prudence. May display selfishness and needs to learn how to align their will with the will of others. It is difficult for the child to express feelings of anger and irritation, which may lead to physical and emotional problems. Anger that is long suppressed may erupt like a volcano. It is possible that parents prevent the child from self-assertion, which may block the free process of mutual understanding between them. As the child matures, there may be shyness regarding sexual matters and feelings of guilt. It is important to explain that sexual sensations are a natural part of the maturation process.

Opposition, square: the person feels helpless, loses strength, withdraws into themselves or gives in to laziness and idleness, experiences attacks of despair. There may be emotional indifference, tendencies toward violence or masochism. This sometimes manifests in mild forms of manic-depressive psychosis, alternating waves of energy and exhaustion, apathy—depending on which planet dominates: Mars or Saturn.

Mars square: A razor used to sharpen a writer’s pen should not be used to chop cabbage. The square of Mars imparts coarseness and disharmonious force to planetary expressions, destroying its principle in all subtle manifestations. This destruction occurs both in the inner and outer world, and if the person does not attempt to resist it, it can be quite intense. Karmically, the Mars square signifies a prohibition on the direct, immediate-energetic expression of the planetary principle (which never turns out harmonious or constructive) and demands the processing of its higher octave. Internally, the person remains deeply interested in the areas ruled by the planet; some force draws them there, and their opinion of their abilities (and often achievements) in these areas may be very high, although failures and disappointments will not be long in coming. At a low level, such a person may be occasionally dangerous to others in the planet’s spheres, but always poses the greatest danger to themselves. In the case of a Mars square, the karmic law of retribution for introducing disharmony into the world operates energetically and often quite swiftly (though sometimes the backlash affects only the inner world, where internal destruction occurs, possibly unnoticed by others, except for the fact that the person’s overall level drops sharply). In inner life, this aspect allows for significant growth, awareness of one’s crude subconscious programs, including almost animal instincts, which in this case are presented very vividly and distinctly, especially when the planet is activated, and their transformation into a more civilized and acceptable form—that is, a shift toward higher vibrational energies. Working through this aspect enables operating with the planet on low energies while revealing such subtleties of its principle that are otherwise completely inaccessible. The person will know everything about the planet’s destructive force in its lower octave, giving them insight into its manifestations in others and the ability to help them work through its principle, especially in taming their lower nature in corresponding areas; however, they will still never fully master a free flow of its vibrations at a low level. For example, a Mars-Venus square may produce a refined sensualist or an excellent sexologist, but this person will never become a sexual giant. Saturn square: The steps of evolutionary ladders are not carpeted. The Saturn square presents the person with the challenge, in the planet’s areas of influence, of deep self-immersion, developing inner discipline, and seeking truth through silent concentration. The problem here is that, on one hand, the planetary principle attracts the person—they desire to deeply understand and master it—while on the other hand, attempts at such study encounter strong resistance, both external and internal. The study itself proves extremely difficult, requiring far greater concentration and effort than the person currently possesses, and furthermore, chaotic inner and outer forces constantly distract them from this pursuit. After several unsuccessful attempts, the planetary principle (and much of its sphere of influence) becomes frozen and is accepted by the person as unattainable, though subconsciously intensely desired. The subconscious reacts with various mechanisms that keep the person tied to this disharmonious situation—for example, savior complexes, feelings of inferiority, and neuroses that protect them from having to participate in situations activating the planet, but unfortunately produce various side effects (e.g., increased overall nervousness, etc.). If the square is dominated by the stronger planet, it may replace part of the purely Saturnian spheres, suppressing discipline and focus; for instance, a Venus-Saturn square with strong Saturn produces (at a low level) rigidity and coarseness in social contacts and love, whereas with a strong Venus it may instead produce frivolity and indiscriminateness in relationships (especially if the square is in the mutable cross); in either case, of course, the person’s heart remains frozen. The Saturn square prevents the spontaneous expression of the planetary principle; here, the person requires wisdom and precise adherence to the karmic program, which at this point (unfortunately!) is very subtle and winding. This situation resembles being asked to carve wood with an axe or to dance a ballroom dance in a diving suit. At first, every movement is clumsy—crude and unsatisfactory from any standpoint—but the desire to learn and ambition may be very strong, and much depends on the individual, their inner honesty, and their overall drive to realize themselves and participate in the evolutionary process (as they understand it). Working through the Saturn square grants the person, in the planet’s areas of influence, subtlety, wisdom, and the ability to recognize and help develop corresponding talents in others when they are still invisible to everyone else.
Francesca Sakoyan. Aspects
Severity, prudence, constant disappointment in affairs leading to bitterness, gloominess, and bad mood. Ambitious plans often fail. Problems in marriage and communication. Excessive prudence and discipline hinder normal, healthy development. Frequent physical defects, violence, accidents, bone fractures. Career may suffer greatly. Often associated with military professions. Lack of balance and clarity of direction. Saturn does not obstruct affairs but fails to govern or direct them—this occurs when favorable aspects are present. Tasks are rarely brought to completion, as there is no sense of purpose for doing so. Often involves hard, even dangerous work. Professional risks often end in death. Cold, indifferent, self-centered. Unwilling to help others unless personal gain is involved.
S.V. Shestopalov. Planetary Aspects
The most dangerous aspect in the horoscope. The impulse to action and consciousness are in conflict; great carelessness, tendency to get into dangerous or conflict situations; risk of accidents; stubbornness, uncooperativeness, inclination to arguments and opposition; constant dissatisfaction, ambition. Strong appetite, sometimes “ravenous”; there can be cruelty and harshness, anger, hatred, coarseness. Vulgarity, belligerence, rudeness. In women, it may lead to remaining unmarried. There can also be positive manifestations of this aspect—ability to act quickly and decisively in dangerous situations. This is also the aspect of dangerous professions—stunt performers, firefighters. Children with this aspect in their horoscope are advised to engage in sports and training, which will help avoid dangers, although sports themselves carry a risk of injury.
